Danny Mills on Timothy Fosu-Mensah: "Young players often do well for the first four or five games, then tail off a bit. Sometimes a little bit of reality kicks in, it’s whether they can do it seven to 20 games. You’ve never quite made it until you’ve played 50 games.

“It’s different as a striker, you get thrown on for 10 minutes and if you give the ball away you’re 70 yards from goal.

“If you’re a defender, you make a mistake it ends up in the goal and you can’t get back from that. He’s got a lot of potential and looks a good prospect for the future, but that’s all it is at the moment.”

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is not what we wanted of course, but we gave our best. They were better tonight in the majority of the game. We had energy and commitment but they were killing us with ball possession.

"Apart from the first 15 minutes and final 20 they were the better side and we have to admit it. 

"We are fighting to finish as high as possible in the league, we have seven big games coming. This is a big disappointment. It takes out a bit of energy and motivation but we still have a big thing to play for. We are going to bounce back."

James Cheetham: Interesting times when you think United may struggle to hold onto a player. Not just De Gea. Rashford too.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal, speaking to BBC Sport: "We played defensively very well. We didn't give so much away. They lost the ball a lot of times and I believe with a bit more composure we could have finished it much earlier. I said at half-time we had to show composure in the third and fourth phase. We did that better but I still believe we could have finished the game earlier. 

On Rashford's finish: "Yes. I was on the bench behind his shot. I saw the corner of the goal and I thought you have to shoot and he did but it is much more difficult than you think."

On David de Gea: "He is our goalkeeper. We kept him and that is because he is one of the best you can imagine. I am very happy with him."

On the importance of winning the FA Cup: "It is not important for me, it is important for the club, for the players and for the team. I said I wanted a title and I am very happy but it is very important for the club."

There's no doubt about it, this has been a stressful season for Louis van Gaal. There's a few more wisps of grey in his hair but he'll have enjoyed this result tonight.

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini, speaking to BBC Sport: "My goal was not luck, I wanted to do that. It was an important goal, good for the confidence. We are in the semi-final now and focus on the next game. We will do everything to win the FA Cup. It is an important trophy in England."  

Edmund Emiowei:  Winning the FA Cup - as well as the emergence of the youth players - might just be enough to save Louis van Gaal's job.

“If you’re in good form, why not take him as a substitute. If you need to change a game, bring him off the bench.

“Andy Carroll won’t be fit. I know he scored a hat-trick at the weekend, but tonight he was anonymous and unless you give him perfect service into the box there is no real game plan.

“Andy Carroll only really plays one way.”

Manchester United's Michael Carrick speaks to BBC Sport: "It was massive. A great opportunity for us to get to Wembley. West Ham are flying and it's a tough place to come. We believed we would come here and win and we have done that."

On De Gea: "He's been unbelievable for us for so long now. We needed him at the end. The goal gave them incentive. We defended well at times but David stepped up.

"We have had some terrific results and some bad ones. That's something we have tried to put right. We need to be consistent and that's the challenge we have to set ourselves."
