  1. 'I'd dread to think where we would be without Defoe'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 7 May 2016

    Sunderland 3-2 Chelsea

More from Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce after Jermain Defoe's winner against Chelsea: "Our goalkeeper made two unbelievably good saves which has given us the platform to score two quick goals to get in front. Every man has done his job today and done it very well.

"You give Jermain Defoe a chance and generally at least hits the target. We’ve crawled out of the bottom three by the number of goals that he’s scored. Without him I dread to think where we’d be as a team."

  2. Our destiny in our hands - Allardycepublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 7 May 2016

    Sunderland 3-2 Chelsea

Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce on Match of the Day: “It’s the first time we’ve come from behind to win a game of football this season and that shows the desire of the players, the quality of the players.

"The character and determination has shone through, along with the quality of our finishing at last. To see the players at half-time they were looking dejected and jaded, we sorted that defensive side out in the second half.

"The atmosphere is what makes players play well an the atmosphere today certainly enthused the players to give their all. Everton are better away from home than home, it’s going to be tough one but our destiny is in our own hands."

  3. 'The Magpies showed very little'published at 17:24 British Summer Time 7 May 2016

    Premier League reaction

    Kevin Kilbane
Ex-Sunderland midfielder on 5 live Sport

"Everything Sunderland had - desire and teamwork - Newcastle just didn't have. If ever there was a team to be taken down it was Aston Villa. But the Magpies showed very little, and neither did Norwich. Manchester United have come away from Carrow Road having been gifted the three points. It's all in Sunderland's hands now."

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez: “We are disappointed. Sunderland won, so all we can do now is wait for the score of that game and now try to win our game.

“We were a little bit anxious in the first half. We were not comfortable in possession. You have to take your chances and we didn’t do that.

“We had to change things in the second half. We did that, but it was not enough. The players are disappointed.

"iI was an opportunity to stay ahead of Sunderland and we couldn't do it."

Congratulations to Sunderland, deserved something from the game. That said, Van Aanholt looked a couple of yards offside for the assist and Cattermole should have had a second yellow for holding Hazard back a couple of minutes before, so perhaps a draw would have been fairer?

Sunderland goalscorer Fabio Borini: “In terms of intensity, quality, fightback, it’s unbelievable from all of us. We kept believing and showed that we are Sunderland.

"(The crowd were) unbelievable, and we need that again on Wednesday because that made the difference when we went down 2-1 and kept us going.

"We have to do it this week. We have the focus, we don’t have negative thoughts of relgation, we only have positive thoughts and we’ve seen it today. We know how important it is to stay in the Premier League because of all the TV rights and Sunderland as a football club and city deserve to stay in the Premier League."

  13. 'Newcastle did not ask enough'published at 17:06

    Aston Villa 0-0 Newcastle

    BBC Newcastle
Former Magpies defender John Anderson at Villa Park

"Newcastle didn't do enough today to win the game. Newcastle knew today was a game that had to be won, but they were not bright, not direct and did not put Villa under a great deal of pressure.

"A draw is a fair result, because Newcastle did not ask enough of a side already relegated. Many people said it would be easy today, but it's only easy if you do the job right. Newcastle didn't do it right."

I'm a life long Newcastle fan that is now rooting for Sunderland to be the team that survives this season. They've shown character against the former champions and Newcastle can't even score a single goal against the worst team all season. Sunderland deserve to stay up.
