Bayern Munich 1-0 Atletico Madrid (Agg: 1-1)

    Andy West
    Spanish football writer

"Phenomenal first half from Bayern. Absolutely bullied Atletico but also played with huge amount of technical quality. Incredible tempo."

That flew by. Exhausting tempo and intensity.

Prediction for the second half? At least one red card. One of the managers to be sent to the stands. No goals.

I remember asking a Manchester City supporting friend about Richard Dunne in about 2003.

"He's man of the match every week. But at fault for a goal."

Is Jose Gimenez the Uruguayan Richard Dunne? He's made two clangers in quick succession but then manages a brilliant piece of last-ditch defending to cut out Thomas Muller's cross. Some sort of backheeled volley to clear away from the waiting Robert Lewandowski. Erratic but brilliant.

The Bayern half of the pitch is colder than your loft in the middle of winter. Our heatmaps show that Bayern - on the left - are doing all of the attacking. Atletico have not even ventured into the home side's penalty box...

Viv: Gimenez losing it in double, aiding a free-kick & conceding a penalty. Discipline still a big issue with Atletico players.

Munichwalker: Bayern vs Atletico turning into Chelsea vs Spurs Round two.

John Dunthorne: This game is warming up like last night's, but with extra play acting, mainly by Bayern.

The tempo of the game has gone up a notch, if anything, with Pep Guardiola trying to calm his players down. There's no calming Diego Simeone. A pressure cooker of a human being.

  8. Leicester City: The 606 Storypublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 3 May 2016

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Over on BBC Radio 5 live you can listen to a special programme all about the new Premier League champions Leicester City.

Former Foxes Ian Marshall,Gerry Taggart and Steve Claridge have joined Mark Chapman to rejoice and reflect on the title win, in a Leicester pub full of presumably pretty hungover locals.

One such fan describes last night's celebrations as "possibly the best of my life".

Saving the big one for the Champions League?

chipeprhull: Leicester winning the league I can believe. But a German missing a pen? That will NEVER happen!

Were these guys watching the Chelsea v Tottenham game? It all kicks off near the touchline as Robert Lewandowski reacts to a challenge and Diego Simeone and Pep Guardiola face off in the technical area.

Franck Ribery gets Simeone in a hold, I can't tell if he's breaking it up or winding him up. It soon calms down though.

Like a boxer taking some serious punishment on the ropes, the visitors just need to cover up and get to the half-time whistle here.

demy: How ironic, Atletico's nickname of "The Wall" didn't hold. Shabby wall to concede the goal! Brilliant goal from Alonso!

  13. MISSED PENALTY - Thomas Mullerpublished at 34 mins

He doesn't miss those...Oh! Up steps Thomas Muller, side-footed but hard as you like and Jan Oblak dives to his right to push it away.

Not right in the corner and not really high enough, but that goes down as a good save in my book...

Jose Gimenez has had a nightmare! A few minutes after deflecting in that goal he pulls back Javi Martinez from a corner. Penalty.

If is stays like this, we will have extra time. Though even the well-drilled Atletico Madrid line-up will struggle to withstand a full hour of this. Wave after wave of attacks.

    Xabi Alonso

The free-kick is so close that you'd struggle to get the ball over the wall and down in time so Xabi Alonso just drills a hard and low one around the nine-man (9) wall.

It is going straight at the keeper until it takes a hefty deflection off Jose Maria Gimenez and in. Game very much on.

David Alaba, nominally at left-back but popping up all over the place, is tripped in a dangerous area. Free-kick maybe 22 yards out? Big queue of suitors.

  18. CLOSE!published at 27 mins

Bayern Munich 0-0 Atletico Madrid (Agg: 0-1)

Atletico stand off Franck Ribery which is a bad idea and he puts a great cross in from the left which goes right through the area to Philipp Lahm.

The legendary right-back has an age to weigh up his options and he chooses the first-time howitzer, thrashing a shot across goal and over the top.

Atletico keeper Jan Oblak is warned about time wasting. There are 63 minutes left...

Dennis Ethan: Waiting for that crucial, out-of-nothing Atleti goal.

John Pierce: Mesmerising watching the way Atletico funnel back into their shape. Munich more direct than Barca.

Neil Raymond Fulton: Great to see Boateng finally back after a near career ending drop of the shoulder by Leo Messi in last year's semi.

  20. CLOSE!published at 23 mins

Bayern Munich 0-0 Atletico Madrid (Agg: 0-1)

It's rare you see a team so comfortable to sit back and defend. Bayern have the ball on the edge of the area, usually enough to sound the panic alarm but Atletico just funnel him inside to Diego Godin who blocks.

Franck Ribery then hits a devilish swerving strike from 25 yards which Jan Oblak can only pat down, and Robert Lewandowski shovels the loose ball over the top.

Bayern on top, but Atletico far from panicked...
