HUGE CHANCE!

Atletico Madrid's usually stone wall of a defence somehow gets pulled hither and thither by Jerome Boateng's long pass forwards. Thomas Muller - expert at finding space - is clean through, 10 yards out but for some reason he chooses to pass to Robert Lewandowski, who has a worse angle to shoot from and his shot is smothered by Jan Oblak.

Muller must have lost his bearings. Wrong postcode in the sat nav?

Right foot, left foot, you name it, Arturo Vidal will take it on. Another swerving strike from 20 yards plus, this time off the left peg and into the hands of Jan Oblak. 

Shame Fernando Torres doesn't still wear that mask. Because he's looking like the Lone Ranger tonight. The Atletico number nine, as you can see in our average position graphic, is isolated up front in these early stages.

Viv: Pep's time at BM will be judged by the CL title. Won the treble+CL prior to his arrival, so not being able to replicate this is a failure.

It has been all Bayern but Atleti are the first to test a goalkeeper as the ball is threaded back to captain Gabi and he fires it in hard and low, easy enough for Manuel Neuer though. 

At the other end Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski are close to linking up in the penalty area.

Twinkle toes from Franck Ribery down the left for Bayern before he offloads to Arturo Vidal. The Chilean smashes in a shot but it's always rising over the top.

I haven't seen Ribery play for about two years - it feels like it anyway. I think the days of he and Arjen Robben in tandem for Bayern may be over this summer. End of an era.

What a cross from Douglas Costa as he whips it in from the right, left-footed, and Robert Lewandowski is attacking the back stick. Juanfran does brilliantly well to put off the Pole.

Bayern Munich are doing most of the early running - although they haven't hared out of the traps as quick as we thought. Plenty of possession for the German champions, but no clearcut chances yet.

"Incredible noise in here. 

"Bayern Munich fans behind either goal are taking turns chanting "BAYERN"... "It's like switching the balance on a pair of headphones from left to right and back again. "I'm lucky enough to be sitting close to the half-way line and it's like tennis for the ears. Back and forth, back and forth. "Bayern need a goal and they aren't messing around. Sit deep, don't get pulled out of position and then hit the front two quickly and early. Some may find Atletico Madrid's style ugly, but not me. Fascinating.

Atletico Madrid won't have much of the ball - they only had 38% at home to Rayo Vallecano at the weekend - but they know how to make the most of it. One pass over the top and Fernando Torres is in on goal - but he's just offside.

Lucas, London: Pep has done an average job at Bayern, they've been brilliant pre-winter break in each season but a shadow of themselves after. The squad is better than the one he inherited on paper but haven't been utilised to their potential, and Alonso has proven a big weakness at the top level, not the player he was.
