Germany 1-1 Italy (6-5 on pens)

Germany manager Joachim Low: "It was a drama - extra time and with two sides on the highest tactical level. The penalties missed were even more dramatic. We were lucky.

"There is nothing I could blame the team for. We were the better team in the 120 minutes. We'll recover now and on Thursday we'll continue. The experienced players missed and the young players scored."

Germany keeper Manuel Neuer: "I tried to concentrate on my work, and I always try to read the opponent. Everyone who scored a goal scored in the middle, from memory.

"In the penalties all the players decided where they would shoot and they didn't choose the corner they picked last time. The Italians were very well prepared. They knew I had done my homework."

"We all feel down, we are disappointed but also proud of how close we are to the people.

"We'll take the good from this tournament into the next two years. We have played as equals against everybody."

Italy midfielder Marco Parolo: "We said that we'd give our heart and soul, we gave everything of ourselves.

"Ultimately the lottery of penalty shootouts rewarded them. We have shown that we are a great squad, we have got everything. It is a shame.

    "We are proud, but disappointed."

In a word, Gavin, no. It's absolutely against all logic for him to do that...

When I first saw it I assumed Buffon had won the coin toss...

So confident they'd win he did it just for show?

  16. 'Unbelievable'published at 23:08

Germany 1-1 Italy (6-5 on pens)

Germany defender Mats Hummels: "It was unbelievable on the pitch. We had to do our job. After we went 1-0 up we had a chance for the second but we lost our security and Italy pressed. We let them play and they equalised. That's annoying.

"It was a very intense match, not the nicest game to watch. We were always afraid that one situation could change the match. It could be over very quickly."

Next stop Chelsea for him. He's not anywhere near Stamford Bridge in his mind right now though.

Germany had only missed two penalties before tonight. They missed three in this shootout alone. And they still won. Just incredible, incredible stuff.

When Ozil missed his, I really thought it was going to be Italy's night - it would have been a fifth tournament win against Germany out of five, for them.

But Pelle's was awful too, and that seemed to swing it back to the Germans.

    What Italy complex?
