Ciaran Cundelan: Even in this year of Leicester, Iceland and Wales, one thing always remains reliable: Germany and penalty shootouts.

Debajyoti Choudhury: What a penalty shootout - all the misses added to the tension!! Unlucky Italy... hopefully Iceland will win tomorrow

Martin McCready: Zaza thought he was at Cheltenham lining up for the first fence.

It really was unbelievably bad from Zaza. That stuttered run up, you can't blaze it wide after that.

I don't know if he even had a touch after coming on as sub, just before we went to pens.

Michael Viking: Most bizzare penalty shootout I have ever seen, gutted for Buffon.

Bill E. Kaunelli: Hopefully this will signal the end of staggered, stuttering run ups...

Toni Calderone: A ball just landed in my back garden! Would Zaza like it back?

Some of the worst penalties in the history of shootouts. You have to give Neuer credit, he saved two. He showed us in the game why he's the best keeper in the world.

If I'm Italian, I'm going to remember Zaza's run-up and Pelle telling the keeper where he was going to put it.

Brilliant scenes for the Germans. Pure joy. And a heck of a lot of relief. That was the longest penalty shootout in their history - Italy pushed them hard but probably on the balance of play they deserved to go though.

Can they beat France/Iceland now in the semis? And replicate Spain's feat of adding the European Championship trophy to the World Cup title they already hold?

Some of those penalties were among the worst I've ever seen. The run-ups were incredible and Pelle telling the keeper he was going to dink it.

It's a tough one to take but Italy should be proud of how we've played in this tournament. We've got to accept it.

Look what it means to them. Nobody wants to win a game of football that way but they'll take it. That last penalty was agonising.

Germany 1-1 Italy (6-5 on pens)

The men in blue raise themselves to thank the fans behind the goal where, once again, Germany have triumphed on pens...

Buffon is in tears as he goes off. Will we see him at another tournament? I reckon he thinks he could have saved that last one.

It is France or Iceland for Joachim Low and company in the semi-finals of Euro 2016. They all pile onto Manuel Neuer and Jonas Hector.

    Heartache for the Italians.
