Bizarre from Neuer. He ends up getting a free-kick because he charged into Pelle. That's actually a big let-off for the Germans.

Bastian Schweinsteiger in the book, he just caught the face of a chasing blue shirt with his hand.

Italy break and Lorenzo Insigne is brilliant in the box, jinking into space but his shot is straight at Manuel Neuer, who then appears to slip as he kicks the ball into the ref...

    Settle down...

Under 10 minutes left. Germany have conjured two very decent chances. I have a theory that every team that does better in extra time always loses on pens.

Edward Ditchfield: Italy have an even worse penalty shootout record than England, if it goes the distance you'd have to put your money on Germany

Stephensam Lee: Extra time should be renamed waste of time. hope I'm wrong.

Rich: Gotze to come off the bench and score a winner in the second half of extra-time? Now where have I heard that before...

Julian Draxler has got to play it with more quality. Too much pace on it. He's almost overexcited. Since he's been on the pitch they've stopped putting the ball into the box, with Mario Gomez off the pitch.

  6. CHANCE!published at 109 mins

    Germany 1-1 Italy

Italy are forward, it's a long way back and Germany zoom up the pitch through Draxler, a brilliant opening but his pass is over-hit with Thomas Muller steaming up the right channel.

An Ozil pass and Muller is bearing down on Buffon with a chance for what surely from here would be the winner.

  7. CLOSE!published at 107 mins

    Ooooh!

Julian Draxler can score! A cross into the box isn't dealt with and the youngster flicks his boot at the ball as it loops down to earth, it's just over the bar.

Italy make a change; Eder is knackered. On comes Lorenzo Insigne. He's a bright spark,

So we are 15 minutes away from seeing Germany and Italy, two massive international powers, slugging it out on penalties. Who's got the edge? Who are you backing? Does anyone ever actually relish deciding so much from 12 yards?

The players are tired, it's been a long night, mentally and physically, but Antonio Conte is still going strong. Every ball.

David, Shrewsbury: If it does go to penalties, I wouldn't rule out Conte taking one.

Tony Mullin: Italy, the Atletico Madrid of International football

Marcus Donkor: Germany have lacked a focal point since taking off Gomez. Draxler looks like a passenger since coming on.

Italy's FIFTH booking of the night. On the replay it looks like Kroos caught him, but Giaccherini gets a yellow either for simulation or handling the ball as he went down to claim his free-kick.

Would have been a decent position, too.

When Antonio Conte was at Juventus his mantra for the players was 'you must eat the grass!'

That's how hard he wants his players to work. And they are doing.

Short again. Ozil and Hector look for a shaft of light with which to cast a spell before the Italy defence, it falls to Boateng and his smash wide is far from magical.

This is fading towards spot-kicks. Draxler has nothing of the dash we've seen from him in previous games.

But here's Thomas Muller grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck, his shot deflected wide for a corner. Worked short to change the angle, and Italy concede another...

Neal Collins: Giaccherini, not good enough for Sunderland but fine for Italy.

Real air of tension here in Bordeaux. Even the stadium has fallen silent for a few moments in this extra-time period.

Italy and Germany showed much more attacking intent in the second half - who will have the courage to take risks for the breakthrough?

One goal could do it. But risk going for the winner and you could end up giving too much away. Every pass is measured for danger, but then a few of those played too safe are easy to cut out.

Lots of heavy legs, tight throats, and Conte still whirling on the sidelines.
