It certainly is a nasty tackle by Graziano Pelle. Jerome Boateng is too quick for him.

Pelle is hugely important to the way they play, on the counter-attack, holding the ball up for them.

Aaron Mitchell: Does anyone actually like extra time?

Nick UTA: We all want to see Europe's best players play, but they can be banned for being booked twice in 510 minutes? That's 8.5 hours!

Myles: Sigh, are Wales the only team capable of winning within 90 minutes?

On BBC commentary Guy Mowbray's just reminded us of the 1970 World Cup semi-final between these two that went to extra time... There were five more goals before the night was out in a 4-3 Italy win...

Graziano Pelle picks up Italy's fourth yellow of the night for a late challenge on Boateng. And he'll be out of the semi-final as well...

Bastian Schweinsteiger takes a big breath and stretches out the hamstrings as he and Buffon take us through the second coin toss tonight.

Germany get us back under way...

The Italians all huddled round Conte. Big claps, an affectionate headbut from Buffon on Bonucci and they're heading back to the pitch.

Germany have won their past five tournament penalty shootouts. Do Italy have to win this in extra time? Remember Fabio Gross in 2006?

Italy never give up. After we conceded, I thought that was the end. But fair play to the lads. What the managers do or say now, just one word can make a big difference.

I'd say Leonardo Bonucci's penalty - his first ever - made up for the first half, wouldn't you?

Goal kick, from Buffon. Booted up long, but Germany win it back. There's no time though. They just reach the Italy half as the ref blows up for full-time.

    More to follow...

Italy sitting back now. Everyone behind the ball. Mesut Ozil finds Hector down the left, his cross blocked by the first man.

Ozil himself then delivers from the left but it's headed clear...

Germany slow and patient. Lofted up to Draxler in the box but it's just too high...

Lewlew: what would happen if a Euro 2016 team had 14 players booked in the quarter-finals and 14 booked in the semi-finals but won?

Chris Newton: So much for the new rules...no feinting just before you strike the ball for a penalty. Cost me money!!

Gregory Mandapat: The rule about stutter stepping before taking penalty kicks need to be addressed. It's confusing to all involved.

That could end up being huge for Germany but Italy will hope otherwise as Mats Hummels goes in the book. He'll miss the semi if the Germans make it through.

Mattia de Sciglo! He wants to win it in normal time, cutting inside onto this right foot and firing just wide of Neuer's right stick. He was a way out... But if you're gonna win it, how about the spectacular?

This has the feeling of lurching towards extra time, who knows, possibly pens. Bonucci will take all five if he could.

Just before that penalty from Leonardo Bonucci Italy could have drawn level through Graziano Pelle. You can watch again here.

Alessandro Florenzi couldn't have done more for his team - he's exhausted. He must have done well - he got a 'well done' from his manager, who is a hard taskmaster.

Florenzi going off now, replaced by Matteo Darmian. Pretty much a like-for-like change at right wing-back.

Florenzi, Eder, Giaccherini, De Sciglio, they've all found that extra 10 yards in their legs now Italy have drawn level. They look so much more dangerous going forward.

But Germany still reckon they've got a lot to say. A nice bit of interplay ends with Draxler chasing a ball in behind the back four, but it's over-hit. Just over five to go, or we're extra timing...
