It's good movement from Mario Gomez to get in front of the defender but he can't get the direction on it. Nice little teasing ball from Joshua Kimmich.

It's a good point from Martin. Feels like they're bedding in for the night.

Kimmich lifts the ball up towards Mario Gomez, who's in form but can't direct his header. It's high and wide. A decent chance, but to beat Buffon from there, it would have to be really special. Still, an attempt on goal!

It feels like it's the Italians are just hanging on. It's like they've forgotten to put their passing boots on - a real nervousness in possession.

The Italian way, though, is to just grind things out. We've seen some great football from them in the tournament but not today.

Come on now lads, a goal before half-time would be ace. Schweinsteiger loops in a teasing cross which is cleared to left-back, from where Mattia de Sciglio launches an awful clearance, sliced high and over his own keeper...

But that's brilliant from Alessandro Florenzi. Takes it down with one touch, a little flick over the forward and into safety. Probably the moment of the game so far...

Matthew: At least Italy press when they lose the ball. Germany just sit back. Boring boring Germany?

Jared Maobe: Germany want it fast, but Italy are clever, they're slowing it down every time

Akaakuu Wakjira: Low couldn't sit on his bench because Conte is standing and talking. On and off the field games.

Not much going on is there? Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger had a goal disallowed. If you missed it you can watch it again here.

Oooh. Bit of a worrying moment for Buffon as Hector's deflected cross bounces nastily in front of him. He does enough to gather, but at the second attempt, and a white shirt was ready to pounce on any (very uncharacteristic) mistake.

It's a tactical stalemate here. Mattia de Sciglio is doing most of his work in his own third, against Spain he was in the attacking third.

Another ball long from Italy swept up by Boateng. Brilliant athlete.

Antonio Conte hasn't sat down. Poker face from both managers so far. And from their teams. Nobody wants to show their hand, but we've seen a glimpse of a few picture cards from the German side.

It was poor from Joshua Kimmich to miss the crossfield ball but then it was brilliant from Jerome Boateng, he read the danger and got across that front post to clear his lines. Fantastic defending.

Germany and Italy simply not giving each other anything to work with here. The phrase "cancelling each other out" could have been invented for this Euro 2016 quarter-final so far.

Could the fact that 12 players in the starting line-ups were on yellow cards, knowing another would rule them out of a semi-final, be having an effect - although some meaty challenges have gone in?

    Better from Italy.

Bit of space opens up down the left where Mattia de Sciglio is pretty high up as well - but his ball across the box for Giaccherini is picked out by Jerome Boateng. Away it goes.

    More of this please lads...

Johnny Magrinho: Surely this will go to penalties. Imagine that - Neuer & Buffon battling out their supremacy saving pen after pen. Amazing.

Andrew Storey: This is gonna go to penalties

Giuseppe: patience people, the Italians are settling - goal to come soon,

It really does seem to have kicked both sides into life a bit.... Eder and Pelle combining nicely, but Howedes shuts the door and Germany clear it up the pitch, to where Gomez is chasing down a ball over the top

Foul though. He's pushed his man in the back - it was Chiellini racing across. Full marks for the spectacular fall.

It's a lovely peel off the defender and cushioned header to the back post but Bastian Schweinsteiger's effort won't count. A shove in the back.

A sign this is livening up though?..

Brilliant from Pelle to win a loose header in the middle as Howedes' failed pass comes looping back off this stubborn Italian rearguard, but Giaccherini can't make much of it. It's a scrap of a chance to get the ball up the pitch.

Italy with a little taste of the ball now. Chiellini's long ball searches out Eder in the left-hand channel, but he's shrugged off it by Jerome Boateng.

Germany then settle back to the groove we've seen so much of, with Boateng resuming his sentinel position on the halfway line. You wouldn't blame Buffon or Neuer if their minds were wandering right now...

Look how high up the pitch Joshua Kimmich (21) has started for Germany. And the number six has gone off injured now but you can see how offensive Sami Khedira was in that opening spell.
