It's not been the greatest tournament so far for Thomas Muller but it wasn't going brilliantly for Cristiano Ronaldo until last night, and we expect Muller to come good. He scored plenty of goals as Germany won the World Cup in 2014.

These are two very good sides, hopefully there'll be a high tempo, and it should be very entertaining.

It is eight months since these sides met in Paris on a night which was hugely overshadowed by the terror attacks in the capital city.

Fourteen players who start tonight started that game too. These players have a bond.

It is always difficult to tip against Germany because they very rarely have a bad day at this stage of a tournament, and even if they have an ordinary day they are good enough to win games.

But France will definitely believe they can beat them, especially with home support, and I am inclined to agree.

Didier Deschamps gets a massive ovation as he comes out of the tunnel at the Stade Velodome. Marseille is said to be the city to watch football in France, far more than in Paris say.

With Mats Hummels suspended and Sami Khedira and Mario Gomez out injured, Germany make three changes from the side that started their quarter-final victory over Italy. Bastian Schweinsteiger, Emre Can and Julian Draxler all come in.

Thomas Muller is likely to start as the main forward. He's the third man to fill that role since the start of the competition.

Germany XI: Neuer, Hector, Howedes, Boateng, Schweinsteiger, Ozil, Draxler, Muller, Can, Kroos, Kimmich.

France name an unchanged side from the one that beat Iceland 5-2 in the quarter-finals, with no recall for Adil Rami or N'Golo Kante, despite their return from suspension.

France XI: Lloris, Evra, Umtiti, Koscielny, Sagna, Matuidi, Pogba, Sissoko, Payet, Griezmann, Giroud.

This is going to be a very special atmosphere inside Marseille's Stade Velodrome tonight for this Euro 2016 semi-final.

France and Germany fans have been mixing in scorching temperatures in the city and the streets around the stadium have been alive with noise and colour hours before kick-off.

The mood of expectation is increasing in the host country with every victory for Didier Deschamps' team and the supporters are ready to back them all the way.

If the hostile reception given to the Germany team when the big screens inside Stade Velodrome showed them getting off the team coach is anything to go by, they are facing the force of a nation tonight.

The history of major tournaments tells us, however, that they so often find a way to get the job done.

Portugal await either Germany or France in Sunday's final.

If France make it, it will be their first major final since losing to Italy at the 2006 World Cup.

Germany are reigning world champions, and were losing finalists in 2008 and 2002.

Joachim Low has reached at least the semi-final in each of his five tournaments in charge.

    Remarkable.

This will be the fifth encounter between Germany and France at a major finals tournament, their first in the European Championships. France won the first meeting (6-3 in 1958) whilst Germany came out on top in the next three (3-3, 5-4 on penalties in 1982; 2-0 in 1986; 1-0 in 2014).

France coach Didier Deschamps has told his side they "have to believe" they are capable of ending their long wait for a competitive win over Germany.

France haven't beaten their rivals in a competitive match since 1958.

"We can't change past history, but we've got our own page to write. We're facing the best team in the world, but the lads have to believe," he said.

Since their last victory over Germany, France have suffered three World Cup defeats by the four-time winners, including a 1-0 loss in the 2014 World Cup quarter-finals.

  20. 'Gomez a big miss'published at 18:47 British Summer Time 7 July 2016

    Germany v France (20:00 BST)

    Danny Murphy
    Former England midfielder

Germany changed their shape to play Italy, going with three centre-halves to match the Italians' formation.

I would imagine they will go back to playing four across the back in Marseille, because the French play that way and Germany prefer it anyway.

Mats Hummels is suspended but I don't think that is too big a blow because they have Shkodran Mustafi to come in alongside Jerome Boateng at the back. The Valencia defender played instead of Hummels in their opening game against Ukraine - when Hummels was also suspended - and scored.

But, up front, Mario Gomez is a big miss. They have definitely been better at this tournament when he has been on the pitch because he is a physical presence and a focal point for them.

Gomez is a big powerful striker and, when he plays, they do not have to play their way through - they can knock balls up to him and he can feed their runners into the box.
