No stranger to a record or two, Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at four European Championship finals when he bagged twice against Hungary in their 3-3 group stage draw. He also set a new finals appearance record of 17.

If he scores today he will equal Michel Platini's record all-time Euros goal tally of nine. Ah, Michel Platini. I wonder whatever happened to him? Oh yeah, right.

Here he is, doing what he does. It is difficult not to see this as something of a Real Madrid showdown - Ronaldo v Modric. Which one them are going to seize control of the strings?

    Croatia v Portugal (20:00 BST)

    Predictor

"Cristiano Ronaldo turned up again in Portugal's draw against Hungary but, unlike in their game against Austria, he had his scoring boots on this time.

"Behind Lionel Messi, he is the second-best player in the world so he was always going to get going sooner or later. Ronaldo is never unproductive for long.

"Croatia should have Luka Modric back from injury and, with Ivan Perisic and Ivan Rakitic, they look dangerous going forward.

"I think this will be very close, but I am picking Portugal to win the first penalty shootout of Euro 2016, and progress to the quarter-finals."

Lawro's prediction: 1-1 AET, Portugal to win on penalties

  5. Off-the-field problemspublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 25 June 2016

    Croatia v Portugal (20:00 BST)

On the pitch, things have been going really well for Croatia, but not all is well off it. Towards the end of the Czech Republic game with Croatia winning 2-1 red and white checked fans threw flares on to the pitch and punches at each other. Why would supporters do this with their team winning you might ask?

Well... it is thought that the fans were protesting against Croatia Football Federation vice-president Zdravko Mamic, who was arrested last July and subsequently charged with embezzling money from Dinamo Zagreb when he was the club's chief executive.

He denies the accusation, but the controversy has led some Croatian fans to believe the federation is corrupt.

Remember when all the Romania players dyed their hair blonde after beating England in the group stages of the 1998 World Cup?

Well, Croatia's Ivan Perisic has gone one better (or, more accurately, worse) by dyeing his nation's flag into the back and side of his skull.

Terrible right? Although, (unlike the Romanians in 98, it will make him easy to identify this evening) does give the Croatia lads a novel board for a game of draughts.

You can't beat Eye of the Tiger as a warm-up tune to a football match. The stadium in Lens has just been treated to Survivor's finest moment. For about four minutes, the players out there put a little bit more effort into their pre-match work.

History is not Croatia's friend in this fixture. In fact, history is whipping Croatia across the back of the knees with a ruler as far as Portugal are concerned.

Croatia have lost all three of their previous games with the Portuguese, during which they have failed to score a single goal. This includes a 3-0 win for Portugal in the group stages at Euro '96 (although it was the final game and an already-qualified Croatia fielded a weakened team).

The most recent meeting was a friendly in Geneva in June 2013, in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal.

  12. De facto favourites?published at 19:19 British Summer Time 25 June 2016

    Croatia v Portugal (20:00 BST)

It could be said that the winner of this game will become the de facto favourites to reach the final from this side of the draw. In terms of talent, only Belgium can have objections with this assessment, and they haven't exactly been convincing thus far in France.

The winner of this tie will face Poland, who saw off Switzerland on penalties earlier today. After that, their semi-final opponent will be the winner of the tie between Wales and Hungary or Belgium.

Only after that will they have to come up against one of Spain, Germany, France, Italy, dare I say it, England, or, hell, even Slovakia, Republic of Ireland or Iceland.

  15. The favouritespublished at 19:13 British Summer Time 25 June 2016

    Croatia v Portugal (20:00 BST)

Going in to the game, you have to favour Croatia. Not only did they end Spain's 14-game unbeaten run at the European Championships in their final group game but they have also had an extra day of rest ahead of this game. They are also unbeaten in their last 10 internationals (W8, D2), the longest current run of any team at Euro 2016.

  16. Classy Croatiapublished at 19:08 British Summer Time 25 June 2016

    Croatia v Portugal (20:00 BST)

Portugal haven't won a game yet (three draws if you're wondering) and today they face their toughest opponent to date - a Croatia side who are also unbeaten but have been far more impressive.

Turkey? Volleyed into touch by Luka Modric.

Czech Republic? Got out of jail with a last-minute penalty.

Euro holders Spain? Put in their place by Nikola Kalinic and Ivan Perisic.

If Portugal aren't daunted, they should be. They should be.

Yes, the world's best player* is angry, and Croatia (like Hungary before them) won't like him when he's angry.

I don't want to fall into the trap of thinking this is a game between a team and one man (it most definitely isn't) but I think we can all agree that CR7 is probably Portugal's best chance of becoming Euro 2016 quarter-finalists.
