Iceland are playing with a 4-4-2. In the middle of the park they'll be outnumbered. If we can get beyond Iceland's midfield two and punish them then we have a chance. I'm currently watching England warming up - doing finishing for fun with nobody missing.

For reference, here's England's record in knockout games in the last 26 years.

In 1990 England drew with Belgium (won in extra time), drew with Cameroon (won in extra time) and drew with W. Germany (lost on penalties),

In 1996 they drew with Spain (won on penalties) and drew with Germany (lost on penalties).

    Rio Ferdinand

Raheem Sterling will understand that it is par for the course. This is what happens. When you pull on an England shirt you are there to be criticised.

What he will want to do is put a performance in and get people backing him again.

David Penn: Glad Lallana & Wilshere are out of the starting team but my enthusiasm is dampened by the presence of Sterling who is a lightweight

Simon Cropper: Hodgson is paying the price for taking Wilshere over in-form Townsend. If Lallana has a knock he has to turn to poor Sterling

Aashish: Roy's gambling again - Sterling oh please - why not Vardy or Rashford?

It's not often you see a player brought back in from the cold midway through a tournament like Raheem Sterling has tonight. But I can see the logic in it.

On his day he has the ability to beat a man, doesn't he? And we expect Iceland to form a defensive wall at times.

  7. 'Hodgson will be sacked if England lose'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 27 June 2016

    Alan Green

I don't think England have been that good in this tournament.

It doesn't matter if Raheem Sterling has a stinker or blinder, coach Roy Hodgson's future depends on winning this game.

We all know that it is 50 years since England last won a tournament - but it's actually very rare that they win a knockout game in a tournament at all.

Since the start of the 1990 World Cup England have won two knockout matches inside 90 minutes, losing twice and drawing an incredible nine times.

Put your money on extra time...

We are 30 minutes away from kick-off in Nice. Roy Hodgson looks like a man in a very jovial state, he's been walking among the players as they warmed up and now shakes the hands of referee Damir Skomina and his assistants.

If things go south, this is likely to be Roy's final match in charge...

I've been encouraged by the way England have played. Compared to what we have seen in recent tournaments we have seen England on the front foot. There have been encouraging signs. They just haven't been taking their chances.

England's previous recent history in tournament knockout stages shouldn't affect this squad who are a new crop. This group of England players are far better than Iceland, although their opponents are very organised.

England will wear white tonight with Iceland in blue. Both sets of players look relaxed as they go through their pre-match warm-ups.

The opinion on England's displays so far seems pretty split. For my money they played well in all three games, much better than in most tournaments anyway!

  16. 'Sterling has to prove himself'published at 19:17 British Summer Time 27 June 2016

    England v Iceland (20:00 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

I am surprised Sterling is in the team because he hasn't performed. The good thing about being manager is that you always have the chance to have the last word. It shouldn't matter what team they put out they should have enough to beat Iceland, no matter which team they put out.

On examples of an England player having had the same criticism as Sterling: I can give you personal experience. People didn't want me in the team before Euro 96. I hadn't scored in 14 games. I'd been producing the goods in the Premier League and I won the Golden Boot. I put my neck on the line and said judge me in the tournament.

Sterling has had opportunities, but he's been taken off in games. He has to prove himself on the pitch.

Some great chanting from the Iceland fans which involves a very slow clap - not a clue what it is so maybe some of our Icelandic friends can provide the answer.

The roads were very busy out of Nice and on the approaches to the stadium and there are still thousands of empty seats inside the stadium.
