Plenty of interest in England manager Roy Hodgson's system - not all of it flattering.

It seems like a nice idea to get all these attacking players in the team but Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, effectively the two main strikers, are currently playing too far apart and is a place on the left the best use of Dele Alli? Not convinced.

Kyle Walker has probably been England's best attacker so far. He pings out a great ball to James Milner, he crosses to the back post and Danny Rose shins a volley back across. Harry Kane can't kill the ball dead - if he could he would have been in on goal.

Ben Stone: Don't like Harry Kane on corners. Goal scorers should always be in the box.

Matt Gregory: Cannot fathom why Kane takes set pieces. Even if he wasn't rubbish at them you'd surely want him in the box!

Tom Geoffrey: Why is Kane taking corners? Hodgson's tactics across the board tonight are nothing short of shocking.

Crushing: Oh great. Kane's on set pieces again. Can anyone explain why this is a thing????????

Right, so we are all agreed, Harry Kane should not be taking the corners.

I'm pretty sure that Roy Hodgson has said after the last few games that any of his forwards can play out wide - except for Harry Kane.

Well, Kane is playing very much wide right tonight. And not making a very good job of it.

"Too many square pegs in round holes. Three centre-forwards on the pitch going for the same ball, in the same space. I don't get it. I am not sure what system Roy is playing, you are taking away from all those players all their strengths."

England have picked up a bit, with Dele Alli moving into the middle at times. They win a corner which Harry Kane takes. And gives it away.

Alli on the wing, Kane on the right. Kane on corners...

Paul Staveley: England teams in '90 and '96 had solid structures & picked players to fit. Picking 'best' players out of position doesn't work!

Ian Russell: Maybe Alli in behind, Rooney on the bench, anyone else left side???

Gary Paul: England - playing the best no. 10 in the country out wide since 1982. Hoddle, Scholes, Gerrard all suffered, and now Alli.

  8. Mourinho in the housepublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 2 June 2016

Recognise the man on the right? It's Manchester United's new manager Jose Mourinho watching on at Wembley, Nice view.

Portugal have a man down but England play on, fairly enough, and Kyle Walker advances down the right before clipping a cross to the back post. Wayne Rooney is free but can only head straight at Rui Patricio.

"Dele Alli needs to play higher up the pitch, he is playing in too much of a defensive position. Harry Kane is also too far out wide. If he is going to play Alli and Kane in these positions he might as well not play them, he could play Raheem Sterling on the right and Adam Lallana on the left, as they normally play in those positions."

The first few moments of Portuguese danger. Nani shoots from 35 yards, which ends up about 35 yards over, before a testing cross from the left is heading for Mario until Danny Rose cuts it out.

Not great from England. Predicted changes for the Russia game: Dele Alli into the middle, Wayne Rooney up front, perhaps Jamie Vardy to the bench and Jack Wilshere/Adam Lallana/Jordan Henderson into midfield?

"It seems Roy Hodgson is just trying to fit all his best players on the pitch at the same time, but it is not working."

"I have been underwhelmed and confused by this system. Seems to be a 4-3-3. Dele Alli is wasted on the left, he needs to be central, it has been disappointing so far for England.

"Interesting battle between Ricardo Carvalho and Jamie Vardy, He is 38 but I bet he deals with Vardy very well."

Dele Alli shows a wonderful touch to bring the ball down and move the ball back inside. The move fizzles out but that was superb.

Good crowd in here at Wembley tonight with a strong contingent of support for Portugal. All eyes will be on the attacking formation England manager Roy Hodgson is using with Wayne Rooney in behind Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.

Portugal may be missing Cristiano Ronaldo but still plenty of interest as England look to head for Euro 2016 on a winning note.

New Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is also in attendance, no doubt paying special attention to how Rooney shapes up - and his link-up with Kane is already showing positive signs.

  20. GREAT SAVE!published at 11 mins

The offside flag is up but still - what a save! Kyle Walker nips in to win the ball back for England and finds Harry Kane. He hesitates before picking out Wayne Rooney eight yards out, he is just offside but Rui Patricio wasn't to know. And he made a superb sprawling stop.

Good play from the Tottenham duo.
