"We need the rub of the green, we need to make less mistakes than Hull, but the biggest thing is handling the emotions of a day like this," he said.

"The players need to stand up to be counted and play with the freedom they've been able to play with all season once they cross that white line and show what they can do."

That moment when you meet one of your club's legends...

Former England midfielder Chris Waddle was in the Sheffield Wednesday side when they last played at Wembley in the 1993 FA Cup final replay defeat by Arsenal.

I'm sure he'll be a keen observer today.

Hull City are slightly more experienced that Sheffield Wednesday when it comes to the play-offs.

The Tigers missed out on promotion from the third tier in 2001, but a stunning Dean Windass volley earned Hull a Premier League place seven years later.

Wednesday, meanwhile, went up to the Championship in 2005 in their only previous play-off campaign.

Semi-final: Sheffield Wednesday beat Brighton (agg 3-1)

Brighton had collected 15 more points than Sheffield Wednesday during the Championship season and had narrowly missed out on automatic promotion to the Premier League on the final day of the campaign.

However, a 2-0 win for the Owls in their home leg at Hillsborough gave them the advantage in their play-off semi-final.

Scottish winger Ross Wallace scored in both legs, including the equaliser in a 1-1 draw in Sussex, to send Wednesday to Wembley.

Hull finished fourth in the Championship to gain home advantage in the second leg of their play-off semi-final against Derby County.

The Tigers did all of the hard work in the first leg, winning 3-0 at the iPro Stadium against the only team to do a league double over them in 2015-16.

Despite a first-half wobble which left them 2-0 down in the return leg, Steve Bruce's side held on to secure their spot at Wembley.

  9. The story of their seasons: Part Threepublished at 16:33 British Summer Time 28 May 2016

Hull City v Sheffield Wednesday (17:00 BST)

The business-end of the season saw Hull's hopes of a top-two finish fade, as they suffered four damaging defeats on the road.

Losses at Birmingham, Middlesbrough and Derby, plus a 1-0 defeat at already-relegated Bolton, saw the Tigers finish six points below the automatic promotion spots.

Sheffield Wednesday saw their bid for a play-off place significantly boosted by poor runs of form for their nearest rivals, as top-six hopefuls Birmingham City won just one of their final 12 matches, while Ipswich Town also faded away from the play-off picture with a seven-match winless run.

Wednesday took advantage and sealed their sixth-place finish with a 3-0 win over then-seventh-placed Cardiff City - who themselves won just one of their last seven games - on 30 April.

After two-thirds of the season, Hull were still on course for automatic promotion, leading the way at the top ahead of rivals Middlesbrough and Brighton.

This was helped by an impressive run of six wins from six games in all competitions in January.

At the same time, Sheffield Wednesday had moved into the play-off places, winning five consecutive home games at the turn of the year, and lay fifth by mid-February.

After 15 games, Hull topped the table on goal difference, having lost only twice in the first third of the season, and looked a safe bet for a swift return to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday - having grabbed headlines with a 3-0 win over Arsenal in the League Cup - lay in eighth place, seven points behind the Tigers.

The two sides had shared a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough in mid-October.

Early goals from Cameron Jerome and Nathan Redmond set up Norwich's 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough in last year's Championship play-off final at Wembley.

Gary Hooper, who will start up front for Sheffield Wednesday today, was an unused substitute for the Canaries but managed to get his hands on the trophy at full-time.

I said back in October it's the best Sheffield Wednesday team I've seen in a long time. They've very quietly gone about their business, they've brought in some good players, especially up the top end of the pitch, so it's all to play for.
