I guess we have to give the final word to Sunderland.

Many times during this live text I said they always find a way to survive but that's no throw away comment, it's an art form and perhaps underlines a strength of character that runs through the club.

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink: "The team reacted very well. We played all game for the win and got an unlucky present in the last minute. We should have killed it off and I'm disappointed not to have the three points.

"Hazard was terrific and has been growing in fitness for some weeks. It's good to see. He had to suffer a lot with injuries this year but I'm very happy he's back.

Former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has taken a swipe at the club's hierarchy. The midfielder helped the Magpies back into the Premier League in 2010 but won't face them in the Championship next season having won promotion with Burnley.

"Gutted I won't get the chance to play at St James's Park next season," tweets Barton. "Premier League will be poorer for 50,000+ Geordies every other week.

"Relegation may act as a catalyst at boardroom level. Because they are not currently worthy of being the custodians of such a great club."

Jamaal Lascelles has looked pretty useful of late so this drop will come as a blow to a 22-year-old defender who is just settling in to life in the big time.

The Championship will inevitably bring a regular place in the side for him but one wonders why he wasn't getting that luxury earlier on this season.

More from Sam Allardyce as he speaks to Sky Sports: "I hope I am here next season. We have just secured the financial side of being in the Premier League which was most important this season. What that gives us in terms of spending power, it is the same for everybody. It is about how wise we spend it, find players we need, like we did in January.

"The next set of recruitment is crucial for the football club, so we are not cheering or doing a lap of honour for having avoided relegation."

Sam Allardyce speaking to Sky Sports: "If you go back to November, Everton 6-2 Sunderland, it shows how far we have come.

"There were a long few winter months, we got players in January and turned into a team from January onwards. We became a team that was difficult to beat, who did not like losing and continued the run constantly for the last few months.

"The Norwich result was the big one we needed, we got close, there was a slip up and then I think the performance against Chelsea, the comeback, gave us momentum to win this game against Everton."

Let's not forget the financial implications for Newcastle and Norwich City as they join Aston Villa in the Championship.

With the Premier League's record new television deal kicking in next season, they will miss out on some serious bounty.

It's hard to say if they have spent any of that in advance, neither have gone crazy on transfers but of course, they will inevitably be carrying one or two players on Premier League wages who may have to take a hit to their earnings or head off to pastures new.

Norwich boss Alex Neil: "It is severe disappointment. In recent matches we have known it was going to be a difficult match. We had it in our hands five matches ago but we came up short.

"The story for us is that as a club, we have dropped short for a variety of reasons. We have made vital errors in games at crucial times and the recruitment has not been as good to strengthen the squad.

"The support was humbling. We have not given them too much to shout about and that makes it harder for me to accept for letting them down.

"I am here to do a job, the club will be bigger than me and I am not fearing for my job."

Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley has put out a statement in which he thanks fans and staff at the club for their contribution this season.

"Tonight we are devastated at our relegation from the Premier League, as I know every single person connected to this football club will be," he writes.

"I want to thank all of the fans for the support you have shown for the club you love throughout the season, in spite of this massive disappointment and under-achievement.

"We know that supporters want to know what the future holds and will want to hear more from us as soon as possible.  The process of scrutinising what went wrong and planning for what is to come has already begun. Right now, of course, Rafa and the team must prepare for the final game of the season but after that, please rest assured we will communicate more fully with supporters."   

Right, we will of course touch on Watford, Liverpool, Chelsea and Everton but much of our focus is on the relegation portion of tonight's buffet.

This result must surely be the end for Roberto Martinez as Everton manager.

This was the third successive Premier League away performance that has bordered on embarrassment after the losses at Liverpool and Leicester City.

Such is the strength of discontent about the Martinez regime that it might actually be humane to withdraw the Catalan from the firing line before a potentially toxic final game at home to Norwich City this weekend.

There will be a lot of Sunderland talk, a lot of Newcastle talk, a lot of Norwich talk, but what about this man?
