Jermain Defoe to Sky Sports: "The fans drive the teams on to win games, it is an unbelievable feeling to stay up again and I am delighted.

"If you look at the great teams over the years it is all about team spirit and togetherness, the main thing has been the team spirit.

"Tonight it was a case of being relaxed and not getting caught up in the occassion. The first goal settled us down.

"He (Sam Allardyce) has been there and done it, he is a top manager and away from the pitch he is a great man, we are all delighted."

Right then, back to the relegation picture. If you're just joining us Norwich put on a cracking display to win but go down courtesy of Sunderland's 3-0 smashing of Everton.

Newcastle are heading into the second tier too and we already have a feature on our website about yet another fall suffered by such a big club.

    Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea

Eden Hazard sparkled, Liverpool dug in, a late goal came and we go on to Sunday with nothing on the line. Liverpool of course, will be focused on a certain event in Basel just over a week from now.

Chelsea, well, I guess their holidays are a day closer.

Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea - Christian Benteke

Oh dear Asmir Begovic. That's why Thibaut Courtois -  in the stands due to being unwell - has the number one jersey.

Sheyi Ojo - off the bench - swings in a cross which the big keeper only flaps at to deflect the ball onto the head of Christian Benteke who cannot miss.

Goal number 10 of the season for Benteke.

Sam Allardyce has lost the plot.

He is fist pumping, tensing his muscles (yes, tensing his muscles), pointing, clapping. Not only did his team survive tonight, they were a credit to big Sam football. In your face, getting the ball in where it hurts and generally just being a nuisance.

Hats off to them. I tell you what though, I wouldn't mind hearing what conversation Mike Ashley is having now.

    Liverpool 0-1 Chelsea

Liverpool have only lost once in seven league games so this would be a cracking grind by Chelsea... AND THEY ARE IN... Pedro is racing clear, he doesn't have the legs but pulls it back onto his left foot and his low shot is parried by Simon Mignolet.

We will come back to Sunderland shortly but for now let's nip to Anfield.

Joe Allen with a deep cross, Sheyi Ojo volleys across goal at the back post and that was close.

    Sunderland 3-0 Everton

I don't think I've ever seen as much collective hugging as is going on down on the Stadium of Light pitch right now.

The handshakes are everywhere you look. John O'Shea has his young child in his arms and little Ruby is crying - it is noisy after all.

I don't know why this is even a big deal, Sunderland always pull this off don't they?

The players and staff are on a lap of honour as we speak and boy oh boy are they getting some love.

    Sunderland 3-0 Everton

A warm embrace for his players, Sam Allardyce has done it again, ducked the drop. Handshakes all over the show, some fans are on the pitch in this moment of annual relief for Sunderland Football Club.

What a season they had, what a season they always seem to have. At one point we thought we may not have any north-east representative in the Premier League next season. We will have two - Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

    Norwich 4-2 Watford

That will be that for Norwich City in the Premier League, for now at least. A second relegation in three years. A noble effort tonight, the damage was done in recent weeks with a torrid run of form.

    Norwich 4-2 Watford

Norwich may have one more flurry as they win a free-kick on the edge of the area.

Romelu Lukaku has just spun in the six-yard box and slammed one onto the bar at Sunderland.

Back to Norwich, it will be Gary O'Neil with the free-kick... into the wall.

  20. Postpublished at 90 mins

    Sunderland 3-0 Everton

Jermain Defoe breaks through the Everton defence - a pony carrying a cart would have the pace to do that tonight - his shot is tame and saved by the legs of Joel Robles.

We have five minutes of added time.
