    Frustration already for Cristiano Ronaldo.

He kicks the turf as he tries to get a pass away and looks round for a free-kick. "Ger up lad," says Iceland number eight Birkir Bjarnason, who is nicknamed Thor with his long, blonde, flowing locks.

He might be carrying a big hammer under that t-shirt. We'll find out if Ronaldo goes through on goal later in the match.

"Iceland are standing up. They'll not be bullied. I don't know if they can keep this tempo up but they're working ever so hard. Portugal are actually looking a bit nervous now - Iceland have had the best chance and they can't get Cristiano Ronaldo on the ball at all."

There's a lake of Iceland blue on the right-hand side of the pitch, but a mass mountain of Portugal supporters dressed in red and green are making all the noise.

Twelve minutes gone and the favourites are yet to carve open the Icelandic defence.

Iceland aren't intimidated, you know, they are really putting the foot in on the Portugal players.

The Portuguese fans bay for a free-kick but referee Cuneyt Cakir gives nothing.

Nani knows all about the Turkish ref, he sent the former Manchester United player off in a Champions League tie against Real Madrid in 2013. Nani better keep his feet down today.

"I really like Kolbeinn Sigthorsson. He was at Ajax a few years ago and when he moved to Nantes I was a bit surprised better teams weren't in for him.

"His record for the national team is amazing and I think he can cause Portugal a lot of problems. In a friendly game against France he was outstanding against us."

End-to-end stuff, it's a breathless start. Fenerbahce winger Nani flicks a header straight at the Iceland goalkeeper and seconds later, they have to scramble to clear a cross.

Joao Moutinho's resulting corner is straight into the hands of goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson.

Listen to this, he directed the video for Iceland’s 2012 Eurovision entry, “Never Forget”, which finished 20th in the competition.

    Mad one.

"Gylfi Sigurdsson needed to hit it across the keeper - he tried to give him the eyes and it didn't pay off. He has to score there, with his ability. He usually has such fantastic feet for Swansea. Pepe's challenge was poor."

    Portugal 0-0 Iceland

Iceland are not messing about here, they let Cristiano Ronaldo know he is in for a battle and then go to the other end of the pitch and almost score.

Main man Gylfi Sigurdsson picks the ball up on the left flank and weaves his way into the box but his shot at the near post is pushed away by Rui Patricio.

The Swansea man gets onto the rebound but again, strikes straight at the goalkeeper.

An excellent start this from the minnows.

"Portugal are technically great but they're also a big side - there'll be plenty of physical battles. Gunnarsson's already made a firm challenge on Cristiano Ronaldo, and went over to him as if to say: Stop your diving."

"He occasionally forgets it's a team game but as much as Cristiano Ronaldo is known for his ego, you have to respect the hard work, dedication and sacrifices he has made to get where he is.

"And maybe as he's becoming a bit more mature he's showing a few signs of recognising it is actually a team game..."

"I spoke to Alex Ferguson a few weeks ago and I was staggered by what he had to say. He told me Cristiano Ronaldo is the best professional with the best work rate, best drive and best mentality he's ever worked with.

"When you think of the players he's managed or met, to say he's the best is fantastic. You can't achieve what he has without unbelievable attitude - to stay at the top when everyone wants to knock you off.

    "He's awesome at everything."
