"Iceland are not here for a holiday. To be here with their population of about 330,000 is phenomenal. They'll be dangerous. Over half their goals in qualifying came from set-pieces. They'll give Portugal a run for their money."

Today, 50 foot billboards of big names like Eidur Gudjohnsen can be seen in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, but as recently as the 1980s it was the real giants of Icelandic sport that owned the limelight.

A series of victories in World's Strongest Man made muscle-bound power lifters the nation's biggest celebrities, and they're still popular now.

The nation's strongest man and Game of Thrones Star Hafthor Bjornsson has told Cristiano Ronaldo he will "find him and crush him if he scores today".

"If you combine our goals (speaking to Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker) in one season, that is how many he scores every year..."

You may well know that Iceland will be the smallest nation ever to play in the European Championship, you may even know that much of their recent rise has been credited to the development of indoor football halls.

It's a simple equation. Icelanders could only play during the summer months because of the extreme winters, but after seven aircraft hangar-style indoor arenas were built, that all changed.

So has it played a big role in Iceland reaching Euro 2016? No, not really. So what did?

As footballing fairytale stories go, this one is right up there.

In finishing second in their qualifying group, seven points clear of Netherlands, Iceland became the smallest nation ever to reach a major tournament, and the first to do so with a population below one million.

Its population of about 330,000 is the same as Leicester and they're the kings of the fairytales.

So how did a nation which has no professional clubs reach the European Championship?

  19. Postpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 14 June 2016

Austria will need at least one win against Portugal or Iceland (they play them in that order) to progress - and quite possibly they'll need more. The top two teams from each group go into the last 16, with the best four of the six third-placed teams also going through.

Meanwhile, Hungary might already be through with this victory. A point against Iceland or Portugal would surely end any doubt. And based on this performance, they are capable of doing so.
