Chris S(t)weets: You're only as good as the team you play for. Soz Ronaldo. Soz Zlatan. I know this is hard for you lads

Kyle Gunn: The thing I like so much about David Alaba is not only his versatility but his quality doesn't change no matter what position

Purple Tentacle: Everyone praising Alaba as footballs renaissance man will be annoyed with him. His touch has been abysmal so far.

Quaresma, tidy on the ball. Nani tidy on the ball. Cristiano Ronaldo, very tidy on the ball.

It's all slick, quick passing around the edge of the Austria box but again the markers are tight. They don't give anything away these...

Or do they? Robert Almer smashes a clearance into his own defender and it's out for a Portugal corner...

For a moment Cristiano Ronaldo looks to be through, he can see a goal on his record 128th Portugal appearance...

But as the camera pans back to him it's that face we saw so often against Iceland; the flag's up for offside before he can get his teeth in.

Austria have looked a bit tentative but if they go a bit more direct they could get something out of this today.

David Alaba may well be playing in a more advanced role tonight but he has had very little change so far out of central midfield duo William Carvalho and Joao Moutinho. They have swarmed all over him each time he has picked up possession in an advanced position.

Both sets of fans are absolutely lapping up what has been a great start to this match.

    Portugal 0-0 Austria

Portugal turn it up a notch.

Nani turns brilliantly on the edge of the box to beat his man and get a shot away, but is denied by the keeper, before Joao Moutinho's long shot is flicked wide by Robert Almer in net.

From the corner Almer claims a header and holds, Austria can breathe...

Now the Portuguese slow it up, build on the ball a bit. There are some lovely crisp passes looking for a shape to open up but Austria are no slouches getting back to cover.

And they're poised to counter when they win it back - David Alaba's up there on the halfway line.

Pepe's first foul of the night, a little nudge in Martin Harnik's back contesting a high ball.

Austria are looking pretty composed on the ball.

Portugal's forays forward have been of the sweeping, one-side-of-the-pitch-to- the-other-in-nanoseconds, kind.

It's interesting to see the way Austria are set up, David Alaba is playing behind his side's number nine, whereas normally he would go and get the ball from his centre-backs.

Here's Quaresma, is he gonna bend one with the outside of his right? Built a career on that. Instead he cuts inside, beats two men on the edge of the box and Joao Moutinho's little disguised pass falls to Nani, who heads way over.

    Decent chances...

Mike Green: Why was Cristiano Ronaldo punching the air after the national anthem? Did he think he had won something?

Stewart Bowley: Austria keeper is weakest link. Ronaldo will have him on toast.

Robert James Booth: Will Cristiano produce the goods tonight⚽️ or will there be more excuses !!

    Dangerous from Austria.

Martin Harnik connects but only just with a whipped cross from Marcel Sabitzer down the right - anything more solid than the top of his haircut and that's a real problem for Rui Patricio in the Portugal goal.

It is a seriously animated recording-breaking Ronaldo already.

High fives with the officials and Christian Fuchs at the coin toss. Then he went to the sidelines, got a bottle of water and repeatedly poured it on his hands, over and over again, occasionally drinking some, but when he did put it in his mouth he mainly spat it back out.

    Nervous energy?

Portugal have started brightly here, to huge cheers from what sounds like a very partisan crowd. Straight away they force two corners:

Corner one - played short and whipped in from an angle, tipped over by Robert Almer.

Corner two - hooked way over the bar by Ricardo Carvalho leaning back all the way from the edge of the box.

Looks like a beautiful evening, but plenty of blow in those Uefa flags. The pitch? Pristine, certainly compared to the one down in Marseille.

Christian Fuchs and Cristiano Ronaldo are all smiles at the emblem swap.

He had a very good season for Stoke, and if Austria are to progress he has to perform. He has the ability, we see flashes of brilliance but we will have to see that tonight.
