Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka: "The most important thing as always is the points. It's always important to win, especially in a derby and for our crowd who have been waiting for this moment for a long time, so I'm pleased for the players and the crowd.

"The key was the first half. I told the players they would start at 150 per cent but with players of the quality of Christian Stuani we were able to score a first goal like that which opened up the game.

"In the second half we had problems but that's normal.

"The players showed we are ready for the season. We are playing well, compact and with intensity so it was important to get points as quickly as possible."

Sunderland boss David Moyes: "I did not think we deserved to be 2-0 down at half-time. After we lost John O'Shea, we did not get quite sorted. We did not take some chances but they did.

"We played well, we had a great level of intensity but ran out with 10 minutes to go. We have so many young boys and are at the bare bones. The boys did try to win and score in the second half but were unlucky.

"I took positives form the first half, we played well. Overall, they were fine.

"We are working really hard, everybody knows we are short and we will get the players."

Sunderland defender Patrick van Aanholt: "I think we started the game very well. They scored a nice goal and after that we worked hard but they went 2-0 up. We said at half-time 'let's get together and keep a clean sheet and if we score we can still win the game.

"The manager said get more balls in the box and get crosses in. I think we dominated the second half and we're disappointed we didn't get a second goal. 

"I think the way we played in the second half, we should not be scared of anyone. The season has just started I am very positive we are capable of winning games."

Sunderland have picked up just two points from their last six Premier League home games against newly-promoted teams.

Burnley and Hull will look forward to playing against them too, then.

Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing: "It was always going to be difficult and we made it hard for ourselves in the second half. It is a massive three points through.

"The timing of the second goal was very important. We defended well throughout the team but disappointed we conceded.

"Not many players in our team have played much in the Premier League. It was a team effort today."

Chris Russell: 43,000+ turn up to watch Sunderland sell their best players for very little and play with no organisation whatsoever. Shambles.

Former Sunderland defender Gary Bennett on BBC Newcastle: "Sunderland went into pieces in the first half and if that's a sample of what we are going to put up with we are going to struggle.

" I know Sunderland had to make changes but Middlesbrough didn't have to work hard to go two goals up. 

"The second half Sunderland did a bit better. Lynden Gooch came into the middle of the park and showed a bit of energy and got on the ball and wanted to make things happen. But on that performance Sunderland have gone backwards."
