  1. 'Phelan deserves Hull job'published at 11:08 British Summer Time 21 August 2016

    Swansea 0-2 Hull

Match of the Day's Phil Neville thinks Mike Phelan should be given the permanent manager's job.

Phelan, 53, was promoted from assistant boss to caretaker manager when Steve Bruce resigned in July.

"He can handle the situation at Hull and the players are playing for him," Neville, who worked with Phelan at Manchester United, said.

"He's done an incredible job so far.

"Mick's galvanised that team spirit. They've had a horrendous pre-season. They've got no squad and he's had kids on the bench.

"If you talk about someone who deserves the opportunity then it's Mick Phelan."

Hull made it two wins from two with a 2-0 victory at Swansea City.

Tigers substitute Shaun Maloney and Abel Hernandez, in injury time, scored their goals.

    Burnley 2-0 Liverpool

But it wasn't all rosy for Burnley yesterday as homophobic tweets from goalscorer Andre Gray emerged.

One 2012 tweet from the player, who was then playing for non-league Hinckley, appeared to suggest gay people should die.

He offered "a sincere and unreserved apology" after the tweets emerged last night.

"The tweets were posted four years ago when I was a completely different person to the man I am now. I do not hold the beliefs written in those tweets whatsoever."

  4. MOTD analysis - 'They're not Barcelona'published at 10:49 British Summer Time 21 August 2016

    Burnley 2-0 Liverpool

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy: "There are real issues for Liverpool. Are they good enough to play from the back all the time?

"They're not Barcelona. They have to mix the game up better."

Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville: "When Jurgen Klopp came to the Premier League we thought he would be a direct coach, get the ball forward and play fast, attacking football

"To play this system well you have to have your centre-backs control the game. Against Burnley they were poor."

  5. Clarets not 'bogged down with stats'published at 10:44 British Summer Time 21 August 2016

    Burnley 2-0 Liverpool

"I thought we made Liverpool look uncomfortable," Burnley boss Sean Dyche told Match of the Day. "We think we can be a threat to teams.

"We have never been bogged down with all the stats about possession. There is something marvellous when you see someone give everything to the cause. That's what I thought we did."

    Burnley 2-0 Liverpool

Hull making it a perfect start was not actually the main talking point yesterday, that honour goes to fellow promoted side Burnley.

    Sean Dyche's Clarets stunned Liverpool 2-0 with a record-breaking smash-and-grab victory.

Their 19% possession was the lowest by a winning side in the Premier League since Opta started recording the statistic in the 2003-04 season.

Sam Vokes and Andre Gray scored in the first half, their first goals in England's top flight.
