Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: "I know what the derby means. I've played them everywhere, but I always want to be in a position of emotional control. If we want to win we have to be at the top.

"They have a very good manager. They always have very good players and bought more. They are what they are since I returned to England. They are a title contender and you have to respect them."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested any personal rivalry with United manager Jose Mourinho is created "from the media".

"We can't control that," added the Catalan. "I said it many times - I have a lot of respect for Mourinho. I always try to learn from all of my colleagues - it's the same with him.

"He was my coach, my assistant coach with Sir Bobby Robson [at Barcelona]. OK, the last period at Barcelona and Real Madrid was not easy for both of us but we met each other two, three weeks ago at the managers' Premier League meeting.

"Of course I'll accept a glass of wine after the game if he invites me."

The Times, for example, give us "The Puncher against the Philosopher" - the makings of the shortest fist-fight in history. Oh, Pep may be able top out-think his rival, but unfortunately Jose has brought a big old piece of wood with a nail through it.

It's that age-old battle between those perceived as pragmatist and idealist. In the mind of many it is a clash between the man who parks the bus and the bloke who drives it. It's Niki Lauda v James Hunt, Bjorn Borg v John McEnroe, Ivan Drago v Rocky Balboa.

After experimenting with mediocrity of late, Manchester's United and City have clearly decided it is not for them.

Cue a high-profile managerial appointment each and some ludicrously hefty spending and they are back in the game. In your face, last season's heart-stirring, passion-rekindling football fairytale.

Today offers the opportunity to plant an early flag in Mancunian soil. But that is not all. Oh no...
