Ollie Coe: It's only Malta but England are at least doing the right things! Must be said that Rooney still looks our worst player

Mark in Glastonbury: Granted Rooney is doing OK, but he's negating everything that we should be doing. We are slow in the build up and choosing the wrong option too many times. When we beat Germany away without him we were electric. Him strolling around like a quarter back is no good.

Jon Evans: Good start for Southgate so far. Could easily be 3/4-0+ this half . Nice to see some width and forward runs. Nice change.

I think so many times we have been here watching these games and it has been a bit slow, lethargic and there has not been any real excitement.

The ball has been given away by England but the one and two touch passing has been better. I can see they are trying to move the ball around quickly.

It looks like a slightly different style of play.

  3. Memorable day for Lewisham youngsterspublished at 17:56 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

Love this. A team from Lewisham has won the chance to represent England at the Danone Nations Cup after winning the English leg of the tournament.

The Danone Nations Cup is the world's largest football tournament for 10-12 year olds and these youngsters have played more than 50 games on their way to lifting the trophy at Leicester's King Power Stadium.

They are the game to watch how the seniors get on before travelling to Paris on the 13 October to compete at the Stade de France against elite teams from across the world, with Brazil, Argentina and China in their group.

    Good luck lads!

I look at it and yes, it is Malta and they are not a great side, but I have been pleased with England's tempo.

They have tried to be on the front foot. It hasn't been perfect, there have been mistakes and the quality in the final third is not always brilliant but I see a slight difference in the way of playing than in similar games here before.

  6. HALF-TIMEpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    England 2-0 Malta

So far so good for Gareth Southgate. It may only be Malta but England are doing what they need to do so far. If not for Andrew Hogg, they could easily have been four or five goals to the good.

    England 2-0 Malta

Wayne Rooney tries to pick a pass through the Malta defence for Daniel Sturridge, but the Liverpool forward dosen't clock his captain's intention and the ball trickles out of play.

Two minutes of time added on, with England well in control.

If this is how England are going to play from now on, they will do better.

Yes it is only Malta but that is who is in front of them.

Hopefully this is a sign of what is to come.

What's Malta's game plan now? Damage limitation? They've got eight men back as England embark on another attack but even with all the bodies packing out their area the visitors can't prevent England from getting a shot on goal as Daniel Sturridge heads a cross at Andrew Hogg.

    Phil McNulty

This really is now a question of how many England will score - Malta have been embarking on damage limitation from the first whistle while Gareth Southgate's side simply have to keep patient and rack up the goals.

This could already be five or six but for the heroic efforts of Malta keeper Andrew Hogg.

People always talk about Jordan Henderson but today he has been excellent.

You have to question the opposition but the quality of his passing and crossing has been excellent.

That was a much better move from England. Swift passing, concise passing.

It wasn't perfect but it was more decisive, positive.

Not much Andrew Hogg can do about this one. England get their reward for some patient build-up play with a second. This time some neat passing unlocks the defence to allow Dele Alli to stab a shot at goal, his initial effort is saved but the Tottenham forward is there to stab home the rebound.

Stacy Phillips: It's Henderson's passing and crossing that has been the most incisive so far. Great finish by Sturridge too.

Matt in Wiltshire: Usually Henderson's biggest critic, but his passing so far has made his midfield partner look surplus to requirements. Quality passes over the top and opening them up through the middle.

England are starting to cause more than a few problems. That one goal has given them confidence.

What I am pleased with is the tempo. It has been better than what we often see against the lesser teams here.

  20. GREAT SAVE!published at 32 mins

    England 1-0 Malta

Andrew Hogg may play his football in Malta but he was born not too far from Wembley in Kingston upon Thames. If he has any family and friends in the crowd, he is putting on a good show for them. He makes his third good save of the game to deny Jesse Lingard's close-range header.
