I don't think this performance will convince Wayne Rooney's detractors that he is worth his place in the team. He's played a couple of nice balls, but hasn't been as big an influence on the play as he would have liked.

Twenty minutes to go. Malta have just been into the box for the first time, but nothing to trouble Joe Hart from his slumber.

This is like a testimonial and Wembley's atmosphere reflects it. England's attack is playing Malta's defence and it is not terribly inspiring.

There has been one hero tonight and that is Malta's goalkeeper Andrew Hogg, who has kept the scoreline respectable.

Maybe Marcus Rashford can liven things up.

A change that plenty of people have been calling for. On comes Marcus Rashford for Theo Walcott. The game certainly needs an injection of energy.

Walcott does everything right and the 'keeper makes a good save again.

Richard Browne: Can someone (Gareth?) explain why Rooney is still on the pitch? He'd have been yanked in the Championship.

Martin from Portsmouth: Rooney needs to retire now rather than after the World Cup he just doesn't cut it now he's on the wrong side of his career. Yeah still a great talent but wasted as a attacking midfielder.  

Luke: Lingard has fully justified his start over Rashford. We are seeing what JM sees in him. Class

Not much tempo to England's attacks but some positive play by Jesse Lingard - who has impressed on debut - creates a chance as he charges at the defence before squeezing a pass to Theo Walcott, but Andrew Hogg is quick off his line to close down the gap and deny the Arsenal forward.

England look so much better when they move the ball quicker and sharper. 

The quality in the final third, too often, hasn't quite been there.

Malta have a rare chance with a free-kick midway inside England's half. Andre Schembri takes it, firing it into the area but England clear. 

The visitors had sent plenty of players up for the attack, but it leaves them exposed at the back as Theo Walcott races at retreating defenders, but his pass for Jesse Lingard is poor.

Steve Borg gets the game's first yellow card as he takes Jesse Lingard's legs on the left side of his own box. It's another chance for Wayne Rooney to do something from a free-kick, but his ball into the area fails to beat the first man. Got to do better.

Another chance from a free-kick for Wayne Rooney. It's over the wall and heading for just under the bar until Andrew Hogg pushes it over.

A busy night for Hogg, not so much for Joe Hart. He's touched the ball nine times in 55 minutes. 

Early corner for England as Wayne Rooney's corner is headed behind. Rooney takes it, but it's over everyone and Alex Muscat eventually clears after completely missing his initial kick.

What do England need to do in this half to really impress you? Score lots of goals? Up the tempo? At the moment, they've picked up from where they have left of, patiently trying to work an opening.

The players are out and we are back under way.

Aidan Mifsud: I'll be accused of being negative but that 1st half from Malta was pathetic. No progress. Will they try to play in 2nd?

Romania lead 4-0 away to Armenia, who have been down to 10 men since the third minute. Also in Group E, Montenegro lead Kazakhstan 1-0. 

In Group C, Azerbaijan are 1-0 up at home to Norway.

Surely Gareth Southgate is heading to a debut win for England. Malta have barely been near England's box in the first half, so hard to see them scoring twice (without conceding) in the second.
