Will captain Wayne Rooney play just in behind?

Torino goalkeeper Joe Hart gets the nod ahead of Southampton's Fraser Forster.

England XI: Hart, Walker, Cahill, Stones, Bertrand, Henderson, Alli, Rooney, Lingard, Walcott, Sturridge.

  2. Southgate on a 'hiding to nothing' with Rooneypublished at 15:49 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Danny Mills
Ex-Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 live

With Rooney, Southgate can’t do right for doing wrong.

He leaves him out and people are saying ‘why is he leaving him out?’ and if he does pick him people are asking ‘why is he playing Wayne Rooney?’

Southgate had to play Rooney today but he’s is on a hiding to nothing.

  3. 'Rooney best as number nine'published at 15:47 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    John Hartson
    Ex-Wales striker on Football Focus

Personally I would play Rooney as a number nine and Sturridge in behind.

I think you get the best out of Wayne Rooney as a number nine. He is England’s record goal scorer, he is natural player in front of goal and will get goals if he gets the service.

Wayne Rooney picks up his 117th England cap today but the question is, where will Gareth Southgate play him?

“Wayne can play in a number of positions, and very well," the former Middlesbrough boss said.

“The only thing I would say is that one of the things we work on with the team is tactical discipline and positional discipline, so whatever position you play it is clear for the players and they understand that fully. "

  8. 'Southgate is what England's young players need'published at 15:39 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on Football Focus

I think Gareth has conducted himself very well.

He has come across very in control and positive. I made my England debut alongside him and he was a very calming influence and I think he has shown that to the press and the players this week.

I also think that is something this group of young players need right now.

When Gareth Southgate held up his hand to volunteer to take a penalty against Germany 20 years ago, he was arguably unprepared for the responsibility.

He was 25, didn't take penalties for Aston Villa and had been an England international for just seven months.

But the experience of being a significant part of an England low has, he feels, made him stronger.

"I’m excited by the challenge," he says. "Do I feel that I am the right person at this moment in time to do this particular role? Yes."

His first challenge begins with today's World Cup qualifier against Malta. Failure to win, and win convincingly, and you sense his chances of getting the England job permanently would be significantly damaged.

    No pressure then...

This is a date that was meant to be the proudest of Sam Allardyce's career - to lead an England side out at Wembley.

Instead he is sat on a beach somewhere while that honour falls to another man.

... two decades on from that decisive penalty miss at Euro 96, Southgate has answered England's call once again.

Older, wiser and arguably more prepared to handle the responsibility, could he be the man to get England fans smiling once again?
