That was the moment of quality England needed.

Now they can relax but you want them to keep playing at this tempo and really push on.

That was a great ball in again from Henderson.

It is a very good header by Sturridge, maybe you could question the goalkeeper but don't take anything away, it is a wonderful header.

The breakthrough! Jordan Henderson's passing has been on point today, so it's no surprise it is from his ball that England takes the lead. He lofts the ball onto the head of Daniel Sturridge, who expertly guides a header in the far corner. Great finish after his earlier miss.

Gareth Southgate thumps the air in what I'd imagine is a mixture of delight and relief.

Rooney is lucky there. He could quite easily have got a yellow card for that.

Ooof. Wayne Rooney appears to be very, lucky to escape a booking as he slides in on a Malta player with a crunching tackle, studs showing. Imagine, given the scrutiny he's been under lately, if he got sent off? Fortunately for the England midfielder, play was waved on.

That was a good save but Alli has got to score.

He climbs well, it was a free header but it was right down the throat of the goalkeeper.

It was a good save but a relatively comfortable one.

  8. CLOSE!published at 24 mins

Daniel Sturridge. Has to put this one away.

Jordan Henderson is again the architect of another England chance as he lifts the ball over the defence for Dele Alli, who heads powerfully at goal but too close to Andrew Hogg. The Malta keeper bats it away but to the feet of Daniel Sturridge who, faced with a near-open goal, blasts over.

Fair to say it's not been a great start for Armenia in World Cup qualifying Group E, they trail 3-0 at home to Romania within 11 minutes and are down to 10 men already.

Azerbaijan lead Norway 1-0 in Northern Ireland's Group C, while Montenegro are drawing 0-0 with Kazakhstan in the same group as Romania.

  11. Rooney playing withdrawn rolepublished at 21 mins

    England 0-0 Malta

We were discussing where Wayne Rooney (number 10) should play before the game. Well in the opening 20 minutes, only three outfield England players have played in a more defensive position (in terms of average position). Even left-back Ryan Bertrand, who has just come off, was in more attacking positions.

That was a great run by Lingard inside the full back and a great ball by Henderson.

It is a difficult skill with the ball coming over Lingard's shoulder and it came off his shin.

A promising move almost pays dividends for England as Jordan Henderson plays a fine, searching ball into the box. Jesse Lingard makes a clever run but he can't quite produce the shot to match it as he shoots over the bar.

Malta are getting behind the ball in numbers - "in numbers" being code for just about everyone.

Ryan Bertrand's departure with a hamstring problems is an early hitch in Gareth Southgate's plans but it does not look as if any England left-back would get much defensive work today. All about attack.

Yep, Ryan Bertrand's game is done. He is helped off the pitch and on comes Danny Rose to take up position at left back.

Looks like England are going to be forced into an early change. Ryan Bertrand has pulled up injured and Danny Rose is getting ready to come, he himself having only recently returned from injury.

England just need a little bit of composure.

They have had the ball in decent positions but the final ball has not been there.

They need to bring Sturridge into the game more. Get the ball into his feet and he can turn or bring other people into the game.

If England keep playing like this they will ultimately create a decent amount of chances.

The quality in the final third is not there but the tempo is better.

    England 0-0 Malta

Plenty of similarities with the Iceland game at Euro 2016 so far with England dominating all the early play while the opposition camp in and around their own box.

Some neat one-touch passing between Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge almost picks a way through.

The way England are going at the moment, it is surely only a matter of time before the defence is breached.
