Asega Martin: Every fan in England complain about Rooney. The whole England team lacks intensity and the right mentality. same old England.

Joe Baldwin: Absolutely embarrassing performance. Three points will no doubt hide the fact that we have been terrible on the ball once again

Duncan: Junior players play through Rooney who takes all the momentum out of a move. His presence is counter-productive. Time to go Wayne. Thanks for the memories !!

Overall, with better finishing, more clinical, it could have easily been the four or five we were expecting.

The first half was better, quicker, sharper.

If we can play at that tempo, like the players do in the Premier League which is what we always ask for, then at least we seem to be heading in the right direction.

England win 2-0 against Malta. Few boos at the end - grim, attritional stuff. Not many will remember this one.

The full-time whistle goes as Gareth Southgate gets up and running with a win. Three points is three points but a disappointing second half display.

Two minutes of added time. Can England squeeze in a third and add a bit of gloss to the scoreline?

Another chance for a third as Marcus Rashford cuts the ball back for Wayne Rooney, who attempts to bend a shot in under the bar but gets it all wrong and the ball balloons over. Wayward finishing has definitely been the theme of England's night.

Ben Dunmore: All too safe. No risk taking. Balls into a good area = lack of quality. No drive from the captain. It is Malta...be brave

Mark: If it's an open goal it's too easy for Dele!

Simon Latson: England reverting to type in this half. Not as much urgency and speed. Pretty dull.

    Northern Ireland v San Marino

Northern Ireland's game against San Marino kicks off in an hour and Michael O'Neill has named his team. They make two changes from last month's 0-0 draw in the Czech Republic.

Josh Magennis starts up front instead of Kyle Lafferty and Niall McGinn takes Paddy McNair's place in midfield.

You can't blame Gareth Southgate for misses like that. That should have been 3-0.

Rashford put a great ball across the six-yard box. You think Alli just has to make contact and somehow he gets underneath it and sticks it over the top.

If he did that 1000 times he'd score 999 of them.

Should have been three! Malta get a bit more adventurous as the game enters the closing stages and break forward through Alex Muscat. He finds Bjorn Kristensen with a cross but the Malta man loses possession and England break. Marcus Rashford eventually crosses for Dele Alli, who volleys over at the far post with the goal gaping.

It should have been four or five nil after the first half but in the second England have come off the pace, tried things they wouldn't normally do and got a little bit sloppy.

Finally, Joe Hart has something more to do than just roll the ball out to a team-mate.

Gary Cahill gives away a free-kick as he fouls a lively Michael Mifsud. The ball is sent to the far post where Andrei Agius is unmarked and he volleys towards the near post, but Hart puts it behind.

Official attendance is announced, a touch over 81,700. Hugely impressive, although I'm not sure they'll go away hugely entertained by what they have seen. England have played well in patches.

Wayne Rooney has had the joint most touches of anyone else on the pitch - 142 (level with Jordan Henderson). Most of them are around midfield - none of them in the box - as you'll see in our graphic.

Gareth Southgate makes his second change of the game. Daniel Sturridge makes way for Jamie Vardy, and there's a huge cheer from the home fans at the Leicester striker's introduction. He's got four England goals in 2016. Big chance to add to that tally today.

I think Gareth Southgate will be reasonably pleased. He has clearly had an influence in the style of play.

He will know it has not been perfect. He'll know there are things to work on and will like to score a couple more goals.

The 'keeper has made decent saves but the finishing could have been better.

    Gareth won't get carried away.
