  2. 'England need players to take responsibility'published at 16:42 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Danny Mills
Ex-Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 live

If it doesn’t go right in the first 10 or 15 minutes, the crowd will get a bit jittery and the players will be thinking ‘this atmosphere is not what we expected.’

That is when you need players to take responsibility.

Even if you have made a mistake you have to keep doing the right things, if you do over a period of time you will get it right.

BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

England manager Gareth Southgate wanted bravery from his players - might Marcus Rashford have been a bolder choice than Jesse Lingard or Daniel Sturridge?

The FA may not see this as a four-match audition for England's under-21 manager but Southgate now seems keen on the full-time job and World Cup qualifiers against Malta, Slovenia, Scotland and a friendly against Spain present him with the perfect opportunity to state his case.

They love a bit of DabCam in America.

For anyone wondering what exactly it is, these pictures from the NBA should give you an idea. Basically the camera zooms in on you and you do a 'Dab', which looks a bit like this...

Simon Goodyer: How on earth does Rooney start not a midfielder Only good enough for Utd bench but an England starter, couldn't make it up

Joe Wedgwood: Abuse hurled at Rooney is despicable. Would 'fans' rather he were ostricised and ridiculed like Basti? No respect in football.

Paul Radford: Madness to even consider leaving Rooney out! He's our skipper, most capped outfield player and record goal scorer. No brainer!

  6. Messi of Malta to make his mark?published at 16:35 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

Some fans of lower league football in England may recognise a name on the Malta team-sheet here. On the bench is Michael Misfud, who once played for Coventry.

Misfud is no stranger to the big stage, scoring twice at Old Trafford to knock Manchester United out of the League Cup in 2007, earning him the nickname 'The Messi of Malta'.

Throughout my career you had that authoritative figure - Capellos, Ericssons etc but I don't think we need that anymore. I think the FA is in a situation where they can take risks. This is a real moment where we have not got the big players with big personalities, so it is a good opportunity someone like a Southgate or a Eddie Howe to get hold of them.

We're asking what type of manager you would like to see take charge of England.

William Egan: The characteristics needed are simple-ability to pick players on their current form and not on their names/ form years ago..

Jenkaldo: If Southgate does well, I'd like to see him stay. We need a long term English manager who is allowed to make mistakes.

Matt Cooper: What type of manager would I like to see for England? A Pochettino - work hard and play harder, earn their caps and success.

I've yet to see the rumoured DabCam but there's definitely some GazCam going on. Strong selfie game from Gareth Southgate as the fans take their places at Wembley.

England have won their last 13 qualifying matches for tournaments and are unbeaten in their last 30 qualifiers. Surely Southgate will be all smiles at full-time today?

Himal Patel: Forster might aswell keep 20 clean sheets in a row and still not make the England team!

Matt Robinson: Sturridge over Rashford are you sure ?

Geoff Naylor: Lingaard, Walcott and Sturridge better than Rashford and Vardy..? Southgate must have been watching a different Premier League.

There's already been a great result for one England team today.

At the Women's Under-17 World Cup in Jordan, England have just beaten Brazil to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.

  14. England's latest new start...published at 16:09 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

A penny for the thoughts of Sam Allardyce today - this was a moment he talked about with such pride as he prepared for his Wembley debut as England manager.

Instead, after one win in Slovakia, 67 days and a humiliating exit, it is Gareth Southgate who takes charge of England's second World Cup qualifier while Allardyce watches from elsewhere.

Southgate wants his players to be brave in the latest England era - logic suggests they should not have to be too courageous to beat Malta.

    One game. One win.

Sam Allardyce may hold the record for the shortest ever reign as England manager following just 67 days at the helm but he is, statistically, the Three Lions' most successful boss.

Adam Lallana's injury-time goal in Slovakia last month secured a 1-0 victory that means England are second in Group F on three points, behind Scotland on goal difference.

Gareth Southgate is caretaker manager for now, and has four games to stake his claim for the England job full time.

There may be plenty questioning Wayne Rooney's value to the England team, but it is hard to argue with his record in qualifying for major tournaments.

He has scored 14 goals and provided two assists in his last 15 World Cup/Euro qualifying appearances.

Matt Harding: How is Rashford not in first 11? Hat-trick for U21's, regular in Utd side, good form - yet not as worthy as Sturridge? Crazy.

Matt Rhodes: Lingard starts ahead of Rashford. That's, errm....bold

Andy White: England need to be wary of these major forces in European football. After all Malta has 100,000 more inhabitants than Iceland.
