After Ryan Bertrand went off injured early on against Malta, Kieran Gibbs has been called up to the England squad for the Slovenia game.

  3. 'Lingard was outstanding'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    England 2-0 Malta

England manager Gareth Southgate: "I thought first half we played well, we could and should have scored more goals. Their goalkeeper made some good saves and subconsciously I think some of our players looked after themselves physically in the second half.

"We missed a couple of good chances but given where we were 10 days ago I am pleased with the result.

"You have to accept with it with attacking players. I think Lingard had an outstanding debut, linked the play and looked a real threat. He is an exciting player and the stage was made for him. He's enjoyed Wembley, scored twice here in past for Manchester United, and I thought he had a very good game.

"We could have moved the ball more quickly but the game in Slovenia will be different. We managed today would have liked more but we'll go from there.

"I have enjoyed the whole week. I would have liked to give the crowd four or five goals but in their last qualifying group Malta only lost by one goal against Croatia and Italy in both matches. There goalkeeper played well and they defended in heavy numbers but we could have won it by more."

What to make of Wayne Rooney's performance?

It's difficult to pick out the positive comments on Twitter and the result of our vote has 41% of you saying he should not be in the team.

That decision is one for Gareth Southgate to make.

  5. 'Not one of our best games'published at 19:17 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    England 2-0 Malta

Malta goalkeeper Andrew Hogg: "Defensively, it was OK, not one of our best games, we could have defended better. We have to be realistic, we are playing some of the best players n the world. We could be satisfied.

"I just do my job. It was a good game, I am happy.

"England impressed me more than Scotland, the final result against them was not fair. We are a team that can play."

  7. 'A slight improvement'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Danny Mills
Ex-Man City defender on BBC Radio 5 live

Was it a slight improvement? I think it was.

It wasn't the 5-0 we all hoped for but I think if England carry on like that then we will do OK.

Wayne Ellis: Comfortable win, which could easily have been 4 or 5, without having to get out of second gear. Some people expect too much...

Andy: England are atrocious. At home, to part-timers, any decent team would be winning by 8 or 9. Same old players, same old rubbish

Ben Wire: Could have been, should have been, would have been... It wasn't. It never is. Please somebody admit it's disappointing

  10. Same XI for Slovenia?published at 19:09 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    Chris Waddle

I don't think there will be many changes for Tuesday, possibly Rashford but I think Southgate likes Lingard's energy.

I wouldn't be surprised if he leaves the team as it started tonight.

  11. Postpublished at 19:09 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

Next up for England and Gareth Southgate is an away trip to Slovenia on Tuesday. A tougher test and one that should hopefully provide a truer reflection of Southgate's team.

  12. 'A solid performance'published at 19:07 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    England 2-0 Malta

England midfielder Dele Alli: "I do like to get into the box to get goals and assists, the chances were there but need to be a bit more clinical.

"Gareth Southgate is a fantastic manager and he knows what I am about. He told me to go out there and play my football and it was a solid performance from the boys. We kept the ball and dominated the game."

  13. Postpublished at 19:05 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    England 2-0 Malta

It's fair to say tonight wasn't the biggest test England will face. Malta had one shot all night, late on, while Joe Hart only had 13 touches of the ball.

  14. 'Big shift first half, flat game second half'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    England 2-0 Malta

    Chris Waddle
Former England winger at Wembley for 5 live Sport

England put a big shift in first half. There was a lot of movement and it was hard to keep that tempo up.

They got a bit complacent, were off the pace and a bit sloppy so then the game goes flat.

  16. 'Sloppy towards the end'published at 19:01 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    England 2-0 Malta

England midfielder Jordan Henderson: "We had chances for it to be more, that is the disappointment of the game, we did not get more goals. We got sloppy towards the end which we need to work on. It is good to get the three points.

"The number 10 role is perfect for Dele. Me and Wayne Rooney need to get the ball forward and offer protection when we lose the ball."

Big positive for me was the performance of Jordan Henderson. Lively and creative, particularly in the first half.

He completed 165 passes; five more than Malta achieved collectively (160).

I don't think it was about being brave in this game.

It is in games against Spain, Scotland and Slovenia when come under pressure.

The team might not be on top but then you have to demand the ball even if you are not having the best game.
