I was dropped by my five a side team along with my worse mate after a season. We were the only ones to never score a goal, even the keeper had managed a couple. I didn't take it well.

Jordan Henderson was always in Steven Gerrard's shadow. It is maybe a little bit of a surprise he has been made captain. Gary Cahill with his 50th cap, Joe Hart?

But Gareth Southgate has given clear and concise reasons why he is, he captains his club, in big games. The other two are not captains of their clubs.

If they don't captain their clubs, they should not captain the national side either.

Posting on Instagram he wrote: "One of the very best players I have seen and had the pleasure playing with in my lifetime and a man who has given everything for England.

"An absolute LEGEND at Everton, Man Utd, England and world football. We should all show more respect to this great player and man."

Anonymous on text:  Dropped - Rayleigh Trinity v Rayleigh Lodge, Southend and District Sunday League circa 1990. Feisty local derby, subbed off after 7 mins for failing to make a tackle or 3 (never my strong point) left the pitch via the opposite side to our manager and supporter. Their skipper came over to console me and asked if I fancied joining them, agreed and shook hands before I had even left the pitch, spent the rest of the match with their manager and supporter! Good decision they ended up coming 2nd in the League and we ........... got relegated.

I look at England's side and think five players are likely to defend and another five will attack.

Eric Dier will sit, while Jordan Henderson will be given more freedom to attack. Dele Alli will go beyond Daniel Sturridge and in behind the Slovenia defence. They will want to keep it tight at the back and be fluid up front.

The wide players will tuck in and inter-change, getting in behind will be the key.

Gareth Southgate has particular ideas on how he wants to play the game. He found it difficult at Middlesbrough but has fantastic players available for England. He can set them up whichever way he wants. They will be a footballing side who will put on an attacking display.

Germany v Northern Ireland (19:45 BST)

Jonny Evans says Northern Ireland will have to produce a "perfect" display to prevent Germany from winning in Hanover.

Northern Ireland restricted the world champions to a 1-0 win at Euro 2016 as Germany missed a host of chances and keeper Michael McGovern starred.

"They never let us get near the ball," said Evans, 28, of the Paris game.

"The way they controlled the game against us, the timing of the pass, the angles they play at."

Only two nations, Portugal in 1985 and England in 2001, have recorded wins over the Germans in their 86 World Cup qualifiers.

Wayne Rooney is now in uncharted territory - no longer an automatic choice for Manchester United and England and no longer feeling the unconditional love of supporters who once adored him.

The jeering aimed at him at Wembley on Saturday came from a tiny minority, while at United his relationship with fans has not fully recovered from the saga in October 2010 when he wanted to leave and appeared to question the club's ambition and quality of the squad before signing a new deal.

Rooney signed another five-and-a-half-year contract worth around £300,000 a week in February 2014 - a deal which means he is unlikely to be going anywhere fast.

He is unlikely to attract suitors in the Premier League or abroad given his age and salary, so the only serious future options appear to be China and the United States.

  14. 'It's the right decision'published at 18:52 British Summer Time 11 October 2016

    Slovenia v England (19:45 BST)

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton believes Gareth Southgate was right to drop Wayne Rooney and believes his days at the top are over.

Speaking to 5 live he said: "I think Wayne has been struggling for a year with club and international form. He's not quite the player he was and I don't think he's going to get any better as he gets older and after the Malta match I think it's the right decision."

    wayne RooneyImage source, Getty Images

He added: "Wayne can say what he wants but I don't think he's going to be around playing top football, certainly as a striker or a midfielder, in 18 months time. And that's what we're building for isn't it at the end of the day?

"We want to qualify but we want to come out with a squad of players that can go and play five or six games in short space of time in a World Cup and I don't know why we are persisting with this situation."

    Alasdair Lamont
    BBC Sport Scotland

Slovenia battled to a 1-0 victory over near-neighbours Slovakia on Saturday night in Ljubljana. They host England at the same Stadion Stozice tonight. BBC Sport's Alasdair Lamont was at Saturday's match and identifies the home side's key men.

Rene Krhin: The 26-year-old defensive midfielder was arguably Slovenia's most important player against Slovakia. His main task was to deny Marek Hamsik - Slovakia's playmaker - time and space and he played the role to perfection. Krhin shadowed the Napoli star regardless of how deep he strayed to try to pick up possession. He was also a creative and powerful force at times, bursting forward to add to his team's attacking threat.

    Image caption,

    Valter Birsa

Valter Birsa: Much of what Slovenia created came through the Chievo playmaker, operating in the number 10 role and finding pockets of space as the Slovakian back three were kept occupied by the front pairing of Roman Bezjak and Josip Olicic. Birsa has a wonderful left foot with which he threaded passes and whipped in set pieces, creating havoc in the Slovakia defence at times. He was replaced after 67 minutes, just before the winning goal.

    Josip IlicicImage source, Getty Images

Josip Ilicic: Like Birsa, Ilicic is blessed with a magnificent left foot and it was he who picked out a perfectly-weighted pass for Rok Kronaveter to strike the game's crucial blow. The Fiorentina man was part of a front two but doesn't play as an out-and-out striker. Rather he is given licence to roam left to drag markers out of position and create room for others. His touch can be sublime and England's defence will have to be alert to deal with him.
