    Northern Ireland 0-1 Germany

12 minutes and Germany have had 73% possession in the match.

That early goal has silenced the home fans somewhat.

However, the ball does drop nicely to midfielder Oliver Norwood around 30 yards out, but anything Sebastian Rudy can do, Norwood cannot, shanking his shot wildly over the bar.

Here is someone getting something off his chest......

Nick, we hope you feel better now.

Tonight's England squad is a damning indictment of the state of the game in England currently. Oxlade-Chamberlain starts despite not having played well all season, and being a professional bench warmer for Liverpool. Lingard has started precisely zero games for Man U this season, yet makes the squad alongside the likes of Daniel Sturridge, who has managed one goal all season and is usually on the bench. This is why young English players don't mind sitting on the bench at top clubs. Because the reputation of those clubs makes you an automatic pick for the England squad, over other English players who are outperforming them whilst playing for the so called 'smaller clubs'. Oxlade-Chamberlain making the starting line up is an absolute disgrace and it shows how laughable Southgate is as a manager.

    Nick from Watford.

Just before that challenge on Jordan Henderson the visitors had a good shout for a penalty as Josip Ilicic went down in the area under a Joe Hart challenge.

Hart certainly had hold of his foot. And I'm not sure he touched the ball. A let-off for England?

Is Jack Wilshere the player for that central midfield position? I don't think so. He is another attacking player like Adam Lallana for me. Personally the best England have in that position, and people might shoot me down for this, is Jonjo Shelvey. But for one reason or another he does not seem to make the squad.

Jordan Henderson needs some treatment after a strong challenge in midfield and he squares up to Rene Krhin afterwards. A tough tackle that caught the Liverpool man on the follow-through. He was not happy at all but referee Felix Zwayer takes no action.

It's clear to me already England are short in the middle of park. There is a lot of pace in that attacking trio behind Harry Kane, we can see that. But we don't have anyone who can see it and hit that pass. It's a problem with two deep midfield players who can only play 10 yard passes.

Is that a penalty?! Kieran Tierney drives into the box from the right wing and he is barged over by a very clumsy challenge from Robert Mak. Nothing given!

Leigh Griffiths almost reaches a decent cross in from the left as Scotland step it up. A steady opening eight minutes at Hampden though.

    Northern Ireland 0-1 Germany

BBC Sport NI's Richard Petrie at Windsor Park: "Despite the setback of an early German goal the capacity crowd at Windsor Park continues to roar its support for a NI side that have conceded at home for the first time in a competitive game for two years. Remarkably Sebastian Rudy becomes the 20th to score for Germany in this qualifying campaign."

England have got pace in this side and they need to utilise it. Already they are getting in behind the Slovenia defence who don't look the quickest.

It is like a game of attack versus defence at the moment. You would not think that Slovenia need to get something from this game. There are not many Slovenia fans here. Perhaps they expected this kind of display?

    Northern Ireland 0-1 Germany

Could have been two, Northern Ireland all over the place at the back.

Another cross from the right causes problems and it is big front man Sandro Wagner who chests an effort at goal from a couple of yards out, but goalkeeper Michael McGovern dives sharply to his right to push the ball away.

Just six minutes gone at Windsor Park and the hosts need to gather themselves.

On Germany's early goal in Belfast.

Andrew Priestley: What a strike from Rudy! A goal worthy of qualifying for a World Cup. That has taken the sting out of the Windsor Park crowd.

Slovenia are playing 4-4-2 and should be set up as a team that need to win the game here. There was talk of a diamond, or five men in midfield. But they are sat very deep, and not even looking to counter attack. It's almost damage limitation.

GOAL - Northern Ireland 0-1 Germanypublished at 2 mins

    Sebastien Rudy

    Goodness me.

On their first attack, Germany break the deadlock, it only takes two minutes.

Northern Ireland think they have cleared the danger when a cross into the box is headed away, but the ball is laid off to Bayern Munich's Sebastian Rudy 30-35 yards out.

The midfielder takes the shot on first time, walloping a thunderous strike into the top left-hand corner of the net. Michael McGovern need not have bothered diving.

What a start by Germany, all to do now for the home side.
