I'll be kind here; at the moment the two sides are just feeling each other out.

Tom Ince almost gets on the end of a long punt forward but Villa keeper Pierluigi Gollini has learned from his mistake in midweek by smashing it out for a throw-in, instead of against the forward.

It's certainly a game that former Villa striker Andreas Weimann, who's been with Derby for just over a year now, would not have wanted to miss.

    Derby 0-0 Aston Villa

A slow start to the first meeting of these two sides in the second tier since March 1969.

Not that it really has any influence on this match, Derby won that game 1-0.

Nigel Pearson: Pearson: Leicester City departure 'a big shock'

Derby County go into this game having earned their first win since Nigel Pearson took over as manager against Preston on Tuesday.

Pearson is back in football after being sacked as Leicester boss last summer, before they went on to be Premier League champions.

Pearson has been credited with building the 'groundwork', so to speak, for the title charge but he told BBC Football Focus: "I felt pride - but I was very detached, actually."

Time to turn our attention to the iPro Stadium.

Aston Villa were close to winning successive games for the first time since May 2015 when they led going into the final stages against Huddersfield on Tuesday.

But an unfortunate Terriers goal - after Pierluigi Gollini's clearance hit Michael Hefele and bounced into the goal - ended those hopes.

    Bristol City 0-1 Newcastle

    Rafael BenitezImage source, Rex Features

BBC Sport's Brendon Mitchell at Ashton Gate:

"Newcastle United have their first away win since beating Tottenham Hotspur last December - but it was one they were made to work for after half-time.

"Their hosts saw plenty of the ball, but Hordur Magnusson's near-post header wide and Jonathan Kodjia's skied volley from inside the area was as close as they'd come to an equaliser.

"The crowd - who had earlier booed a man proposing on the Ashton Gate pitch at half-time - warmly applauded their team's efforts at the end, despite a second successive defeat. "And the proposal? She said yes."

    Bristol City 0-1 Newcastle

Rafael Benitez's Newcastle United have won away from home for the first time this season thanks to Dwight Gayle's well-taken first-time goal in the first half against Bristol City.

That's two straight 1-0 defeats by teams relegated from the top-flight last season for Lee Johnson's men.

    Birmingham City 1-3 Wolves

All over at St Andrew's and Wolves claim the local bragging rights over Birmingham City.

Che Adams' goal on his full debut gave Blues the lead at the break but Wolves bossed the second half and ran out worthy winners with goals from Joe Mason, Danny Batth and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

I imagine the Wolves fans are doing the Icelandic clap right now... or are they bowing back?

    Reading 2-2 Brighton

Brighton have dropped off the top of the Championship to be replaced by Huddersfield after Chris Hughton's side could only draw at Reading.

The Terriers are two points clear at the top after their late, late win over Barnsley.

  19. goal

GOAL (Lam)published at 16:54 British Summer Time 20 August 2016

    Nottingham Forest 4-3 Wigan

    Oh my goodness.

I thought we had seen it all at the City Ground, but no. Thomas Lam was not sheepish in firing past Wigan goalkeeper Adam Bogdan to surely win it for the Nottingham Forest.

I'm sorry that joke was a bit woolly.

  20. goal

GOAL (Hogg)published at 16:52 British Summer Time 20 August 2016

    Huddersfield 2-1 Barnsley

Another late goal in the Championship as Jonathan Hogg has surely consigned Barnsley to defeat.

Not a bad way to score your first goal for a club.
