Man City v Steaua Bucharest (19:45 BST)

It's unlikely that this game will live long in the memory, although it is certainly significant for Pablo Maffeo. The 19-year-old Spanish fullback is making his competitive debut for Manchester City today.

He featured regularly under Pep Guardiola over the summer and has been described as being a similar player to Pablo Zabaleta.

  2. 'I know Hart's quality'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 24 August 2016

Man City v Steaua Bucharest (19:45 BST)

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BT Sport: "I know Joe's [Hart] quality. I hope he can make a really good performance. Yaya [Toure] is a guy who likes to play football and has his own quality. I am happy to give him the chance to play.

"It's a chance for the players not just to show it to me but other people and the crowd how good they are. We start the game 5-0 but we'll try and forget about that."

Glen James: Pep needs a sweeper keeper, Hart needs a wake up call. Moving on could be good for City, and for Hart's career trajectory.

Let's be honest, this game is going to be about as competitive as a friendly. Manchester City know they are through, Steaua Bucharest know City are through. We should just call it off and go to the pub.

Steaua coach Laurentiu Reghecampf hasn't completely given up on the tie, though.

“We will try to play football," he said. "I don’t think at this level that not trying to play can be helpful, especially when you play against teams such as this one.”

What's the alternative to not playing football?

Didn't Pep Guardiola get rid of Yaya Toure at Barcelona? It's goodbye Yaya as far as I am concerned. As for Joe Hart, forget Everton. If I was Liverpool and could take him for a year I'd be all over him.

  7. Hart can't be cup-tiedpublished at 19:26 British Summer Time 24 August 2016

Good news for any potential suitors. Joe Hart and Yaya Toure will not be cup-tied if a Champions League or Europa League club comes in for him before next week's transfer window.

It's not just Joe Hart who appears to have no future at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

Defender Eliaquim Mangala, who joined for £42m two years ago, looks set to, external join Napoli on loan, while striker Wilfried Bony has been linked with West Ham.

Neither are in the squad tonight.

Will Claudio Bravo be at the Etihad tonight? You'd imagine so. He landed in Manchester yesterday, shades on. Don't get too used to this nice weather, Claudio.

It feels like a farewell for Joe Hart. I feel a bit sorry for him and I think it's a real gamble if they are going to let him go. We have seen a lot of keepers from Spain and when they have first started it has been a really rocky road. For Claudio Bravo and Pep Guardiola it's a real gamble. Bravo is better with the ball at his feet, happy days for him, but is he a better keeper? If he starts poorly and makes basic mistakes, he could be Lionel Messi with the ball at his feet, but everyone will be laughing at him.

When David Moyes was in charge of Everton, he suffered one of his worst experiences as a manager as Shrewsbury inflicted a humiliating FA Cup defeat on the Toffees in 2003.

Thirteen years on and the Sunderland boss will be hoping to avoid another upset at the hands of the League One Shrews in the second round of the EFL Cup at the Stadium of Light.

"It was probably one of the worst days I had as Everton manager," said Moyes, whose side have lost both their opening Premier League games.

Elsewhere, Premier League Middlesbrough will be hoping to make the draw for the third round with victory at Championship Fulham.

"We are the Premier League team and we have the pressure, but we will have to work a lot to beat them," said Boro boss Aitor Karanka.

They overcame Liverpool in their last outing, but can Burnley do it on a warm Wednesday night at Accrington Stanley?

League Two Stanley stage an east Lancashire derby derby when they host their neighbours from the Premier League in the second round of the EFL Cup.

"If I have to raise the players for this game then I shouldn’t be here and they shouldn’t be here to be honest,” said Accrington boss John Coleman. "It’s a massive game for us, a local derby."

Staying in Lancashire, League Two leaders Morecambe are hoping to cause an upset by knocking out Bournemouth, the Premier League's bottom club, at the Globe Arena.

"In many ways it is a free shot because nobody expects a Premier League side to lose to a League Two club," said Shrimps boss Jim Bentley.

"It is not every day that you get to pit your wits against a Premiership side and that is why it is such a big night for the club and our fans."
