Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso, talking to BBC Sport: "We knew it was going to be a tough game. We played a great game.

"I’m very happy with the performance of the team. The team is defending very well. We needed help from the three men at the top and they did today. Starting from striker to goalkeeper, we’re doing a great job defensively.

"We are winning and playing well. Both goals were amazing. With the players we have up there, we will always create chances and score goals. It’s amazing how tight things are at the top of the table."

For all their huff and puff, Southampton were pretty tame in front of goal. Just one shot at goal - as illustrated by this graphic - when Dusan Tadic forced Thibaut Courtois into saving his first-half free-kick.

  5. The perfect game - Contepublished at 18:35 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2016

    Southampton 0-2 Chelsea

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte told BBC Sport: “I’m pleased with the game. When we have the right balance, it’s good. This is the fourth game we win without conceding a goal in a row. It’s fantastic. The confidence increases. We can continue to work very hard.

“We knew today was a test against a strong side in good shape and form. It’s important to win games like this, people can increase their confidence and will to work and trust in the work.

“But that’s the past and we must concentrate on the next game against a good team like Everton. But today there is great satisfaction at the result and performance.

“We created many chances. It’s the perfect game when strikers score and defenders don’t concede. The players deserved this, they work hard in training.

“When you see this type of game and commitment from your players, it’s fantastic for a coach.”

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis, talking to BBC Sport: "Chelsea were very well organised, it was difficult to play against.

"We're frustrated because we had a decent amount of possession without breaking them down. They were clinical as well."

Diego Costa has reached 40 Premier League goals in 64 games, the sixth fastest player to do so and seven games faster than it took Sergio Aguero to reach the same figure.

  8. We need to improve - Contepublished at 18:25 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2016

    Southampton 0-2 Chelsea

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm very happy after this performance. I saw great commitment, work rate – with the ball and without it.

"Our fans were fantastic from the first minute until the end. I want to thank them – we won this game together, the players and the supporters.

"For the fourth game we keep a clean sheet. It’s fantastic. Also we scored two goals and created many chances. We are working very hard.

"It’s early for us to speak about title contenders. We have to work very hard to continue. We can improve a lot. We must improve. After the first part of the season, I can tell more about this run."

  9. Hot Hazardpublished at 18:24 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2016

    Southampton 0-2 Chelsea

Eden Hazard, while mainly operating down the left flank, was a threat from all over the pitch today. He bagged one and set up the other as he scored and assisted in the same Premier League game for the first time since April 2015 against Stoke.

He also had more shots on target and made more key passes than any other player on the pitch.  Fully deserving of his man of the match bubbly.

    Ian Wright
Former Arsenal striker on 6-0-6 football phone-in

The players probably didn't want to do it for Jose - if you look at the way they're playing this season.

I think it was probably down to him last season.

  13. We played very well - Puelpublished at 18:15 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2016

    Southampton 0-2 Chelsea

Southampton boss Claude Puel, talking to BBC Sport: "I think we played very well in the first half with so many possibilities and good play.

"But it’s difficult to play against this team when you concede a goal after a few minutes. They can play their game with a strong defence and counter-attack.

"We played very well in the first half. In the second we tried but after the second goal it was difficult – because my players were tired.

"It was difficult to find solutions, it’s a disappointment because we tried to play good football. We can do better."

  14. 'Players downed tools with Jose'published at 18:14 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2016

    Southampton 0-2 Chelsea

    Ian Wright

Chelsea looked very solid at the back today and going forward you look at Hazard and Costa. Victor Moses looks almost like a new signing - Conte has got him firing.

They took a season off last year I think. Players downed tools with Jose but they showed towards the end their quality and they're back under this new manager.

Some of your reactions to Chelsea's 2-0 win over Southampton...

LifaNati: Jose Mourinho must be wondering were Costa and Hazard were last season. if you cant stop those two then you can't stop Chelsea.

Wasiyullah Budye: Fourth consecutive clean sheet under 3-4-3 formation! Look out haters, Chelsea are back in business. Hazard Man of the Match for me.

Stanley Lau: Chelsea are unstoppable in this kind of form.

Chelsea's possession stats were greatly enhanced by some 'Ole' football in the last 15 minutes. But their attacking stats need no dressing up. Seven shots at goal compared to Southampton's one. It could have been 3-0 or 4-0...

  18. Postpublished at 18:05 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2016

My opinion, for what it is worth, is that Chelsea have put a marker down today. They're going to be serious players in this title race.

Rock-solid defending, pacy breaks, clinical finishing.

  19. 'No-one will run away with the league'published at 18:02 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2016

    Southampton 0-2 Chelsea

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill told Sky Sports: "Southampton's record at home is very good - we knew that. But we knew if we carried on our form, we’d cause them problems. We worked hard.

"Four wins in the league now, four clean sheets – we keep going.

"We need those types of [attacking star] players who can turn the game in a moment. It’s a pleasure to have these guys in the side.

"It’s too early in terms of any team talking about winning the league but its important to stay near the top.

"We want to be up and among it. I can’t see anyone running away with it this season."
