A Dusan Tadic corner fizzes just over the heads of Southampton players as the hosts go within a whisker of a chance for a third.

    Southampton 2-1 Inter Milan

Some might say that was justice for Southampton after they were not awarded what appeared a clear penalty earlier in this half.

Inter Milan are having to try to repel wave after wave of pressure and Stefano Vecchi makes a change, replacing Gary Medel with Eder.

A shocker of an own goal!

Southampton keep up the pressure after equalising as Dusan Tadic whips in a cross from the left. It takes a deflection but Yuto Nagatomo should be able to clear. Instead, he hesitates and the ball bounces off his thigh and loops into his own net.

    Southampton 1-1 Inter Milan

"Oh when the Saints" boom the home fans. That goal has really lifted the crowd and Southampton are straight on the hunt for a second. Charlie Austin harasses Miranda, but the defender's clearance hits the Southampton striker and goes out for a goal kick.

    Virgil Van Dijk

The equaliser, and very much deserved after a spell of sustained pressure by Southampton.

It comes from a corner, as Oriol Romeu's lofted effort strikes the bar but Virgil Van Dijk is well placed to poke in the loose ball as it drops.

    Game on.

I grew up with a stereotypical image of an Italian team.

Niggly, argumentative, playing on the edge.

It's unfair of course. There have been some great Italian sides down the years and the current Juventus side are among the best around.

But given their well-documented problems, Inter are reverting to type. They are going to try and protect this lead with every trick they have at their disposal.

Here is the moment that marred the end of the first half. Antonio Candreva strikes Sam McQueen in the face. It certainly looked like it should have been a red card.

  11. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 57 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Inter Milan

    Should Southampton have a penalty?

Virgil van Dijk appears to be wrestled to the floor by Andrea Ranocchia.

It certainly looks like a penalty, but the referee isn't convinced.

Southampton have some defending to do for the first time in this half as Ivan Perisic attempts to feed a ball to the far post for Mauro Icardi. Sam McQueen is there to clear, allowing the Saints to attack once again.

Great atmosphere at St Mary's. The home fans are certainly doing all they can to urge their side forward.

The Inter Milan fans are lucky their side are not down to 10 men. As stewards keep an eye on them, they are trying their best to make some noise but are being drowned out by the Saints faithful. This match has definitely got a bit spicy!

  15. GREAT SAVE!published at 51 mins

    Southampton 0-1 Inter Milan

Excellent at stopping penalties and excellent at stopping shots in general if this showing is anything to go by.

James Ward-Prowse has another pop from distance but this time his strike is much more meaty, forcing Samir Handanovic into a fine one-handed save.

It is going to take something special to beat him tonight.
