Nathan Redmond is buzzing around all over the pitch. He's been very lively so far and wins Southampton a corner with some persistent play. The set set piece is over hit, though, sailing over the head of Virgil van Dijk.

Inter coach Stefano Vecchi is as close to the action as you can get, right at the edge of his technical area, in front of the advertising hoardings that are in front of the dug out.

He's not being very expressive though. Probably still can't quite believe he is there, after all, on Tuesday morning he was coaching Inter's Under-19 squad when he was told Frank de Boer had been sacked and he was taking over on a temporary basis.

Nathan Redmond smashes a shot against Miranda's thigh as Southampton break after a rare Inter attack comes to nothing.

Jay Rodriguez bends his run as he attempts to chase a ball from the defence, but he goes too early and is flagged offside.

We're midway through the first half and it's been a while since we had a chance of note.

The Southampton fans certainly aren't flagging - they are making themselves heard with the home side having had the better of this first half so far.

    Southampton 0-0 Inter Milan

Southampton embark on another attack as James Ward-Prowse races along the edge of the area. He is looking for the chance for a shot, but there are too many Inter shirts in the way so instead he passes to Nathan Redmond. He in turn finds an overlapping Sam McQueen but his low cross it too close to the keeper.

I realise I am not going to get any sympathy for this but St Mary's is one of those stadiums where the TV gantry is the opposite side of the pitch to the press box.

It means the pictures on the TV monitors are the other way round to my view of the pitch, so when Nathan Redmond fired wide earlier, it was on the left of my screen but my right on the pitch, which is a bit disorientating.

    Just saying.

A surprising scoreline in Belgium where Shakhtar Donetsk, who had not conceded a goal in their 100 per cent start to the competition, trail Gent 1-0.

Turkish side Osmanlıspor have taken an early lead against Villarreal, the only other goal so far.

Shakhtar can qualify for the knockout stages tonight with a draw, while Ajax and Schalke are also through with a win.

Danilo D'Ambrosio has his pocket picked by Virgil Van Dijk as he attempts to jink his way through the Southampton defence.

  10. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Southampton 0-0 Inter Milan

Inter Milan's tactic seemed to be to get at Southampton early and try and get a swift goal. Now that has failed to materialise, they have slowed the tempo right down.

Southampton are doing all of the attacking, in particular Jay Rodriguez as he draws a save out of Samir Handanovic, before Nathan Redmond shoots just wide.

Some more reaction to Manchester United's defeat in Turkey earlier tonight...

Joseph S Leon: Pathetic display. No incision or creativity. These slow starts and lacklustre displays can't continue

Dave Ellis: Cracking strike from Rooney. But don't be fooled. Even a broken clock tells the correct time twice a day

Taylor: Why did we hire a manager that had such a dreadful last season at Chelsea? Overrated 1 dimensional rubbish

I may have gone a bit early with labelling this game a cracker.

After an electric start, the pace has settled down considerably now. Southampton are patiently attempting to build another opening.

Inter are in their kit that bears an uncanny resemblance to a bottle of mouthwash. It's right up there in the list of all-time worst strips.

Inter serve up a response almost immediately as Mauro Icardi clips the ball to Ever Banega, who tries to pick his way through the Saints defence but gets the ball stuck under his feet as he attempts to shoot.

There are two attack-minded teams on show - should be a cracker.

    Lively start by the Saints!

Straight from kick off, they work their way to the edge of the Inter box through Dusan Tadic. He lifts a cross to the back post where Jay Rodriguez rises above his marker to nod a header just wide.

There's still plenty of reaction coming in to Manchester United's defeat...

Sho Rahman: We haven't played with width since Fergie left. We keep playing this garbage 4-2-3-1 system and it's just not working.

LiberianChief: Why did Man Utd sack LVG?Even when LVG lost, he atleast knew what he wanted and was confident in his methods. JM is cluless.

Daniel Heel: Martial is meant to be a future Ballon D'or winner? He wouldn't get in goal in my five-a-side team
