We'll need to score a couple of goals tonight I think. Can't see Russell Grant....sorry Russell and Grant, Martin and Hanley...keeping a clean sheet. Even allowing for the excellence of David Marshall behind them.

  7. Scotland should be happy with second - Gemmillpublished at 19:25

    Scotland v Lithuania (19:45 BST)

Scotland should be happy if they can finish second in their World Cup 2018 qualifying group, according to Archie Gemmill.

The former Scotland player believes the focus should be on beating Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Malta, rather than toppling group favourites England.

He also believes Gareth Southgate replacing Sam Allardyce as England manager may not be to their detriment.

"I think that would possibly make England stronger actually," said 1978 World Cup hero Gemmill.

"I think Scotland should look at it as it being a group minus England," Gemmill added.

"The two games against England are going to be absolutely massive, but if Scotland can concentrate on picking up the points against Lithuania, Slovakia and Malta and take it as winning that group of teams, then they are going to be in a play-off for the World Cup.

"Slovakia will not be easy in any way, shape or form so I think if you can get second position, everybody will be delighted.

"But if everything goes for you over the next 18 months and you finish first, absolutely delighted."

It wouldn't have been my team choice. And a lot of you are less than chuffed about the Scotland starting XI. But it's not often, to be fair, a Scotland manager in recent times has had a winning and five-goal reason for keeping it unchanged.

One sub-plot to tonight's match at Hampden is the game between Scotland's group rivals Slovenia and Slovakia in Ljubljana. England play here in the Stadion Stozice on Tuesday and it appears that's the game that's caught the locals' imagination.

But the home side really need a victory tonight after drawing in Lithuania on the opening day. Slovakia lost out in injury time to England in Trnava and also require the three points before Scotland head there at the start of the week.

    Scotland v Lithuania (19:45 BST)

Darren Fletcher says Scotland are aiming for maximum points from their next two matches against Lithuania and Slovakia.

The Scotland captain does not believe, however, the double-header will make or break Scotland's qualification bid for the 2018 World Cup.

"We look forward to the games and we try to get two positive results, which would be two wins," Fletcher said.

"We see where we are when we come out of them and we go again."

Nevertheless, the West Brom midfielder, who will win his 75th cap against Lithuania, says failure to win either match would not be a fatal blow to Scotland's qualification hopes.

    Do you agree?

Fletcher added: "There is still a long way to go in the campaign. It is no different, no matter what game we play.

"We strive to win, we are determined to win, we are focused to win, we are prepared to win. That's the mindset that goes into it."
