Wembley still almost entirely empty, 15 minutes from kick-off. The concourse must be booming.

Gareth Southgate and Gordon Strachan have a conference of sorts in the tunnel. Southgate resplendent in a waistcoat, like an usher at a wedding.

Or a plucky qualifier contemplating a tricky long blue, middle pocket.

  4. Southgate speaks...published at 19:26 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England v Scotland (19:45 GMT)

England manager Gareth Southgate is asked what quality his side most need tonight: "Compusure I think," he tells ITV.

"We want to be good with the ball, we have a lot of athleticism, power and pace but I think on occasions like this it's important to play with composure.

"We have been working on it through the week and have a clear plan on how we want to play. Whichever team Scotland picked we knew we had to be adaptable and flexible.

"Every time you’re in a fixture like this you have the opportunity to make history. The only way to answer criticisms is to put performances in. It's a great fixture to be involved in but I'm not just here to be involved, I want to win."

  6. Is Brown back for good?published at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

    England v Scotland (19:45)

Scott Brown is back for Scotland - but for how long?

The Celtic midfielder announced his international retirement before the start of this campaign. Now, after missing three games, he's back to win his 51st cap. So is it just a one-off S.O.S to help his old gaffer?

"I'm coming back for this game and we'll see how my legs are," the 31-year-old said last week.

"After this game I'll have a base to be able to see if I can continue to push myself with international and Celtic games."

    England v Scotland (19:45 GMT)

    Pat Nevin
Ex-Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 live

If Scotland play their best and England their best then England win.

Player for player Scotland aren't that close but it is a team, a group, an organisation. Scotland have still got a puncher's chance.

If the Scotland players could put a tackle in on the England players early on that could help. None of the Scotland players are thinking about Champions League matches in a few weeks.

Aamer: Big night for Sturridge and Rooney. On paper a great combo - so far just that

Calum: So he leaves our best available defender on the bench (Martin). Also doesn't pick Marshall or McArthur!! Couple of Celtic bench warmers in for no apparent reason. Great stuff Strachan! Can't see past a 5,6 nil with this team and the occasion sadly. Hope I'm wrong.

  12. Crunch clash in Belfastpublished at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 11 November 2016

Northern Ireland v Azerbaijan (19:45 GMT)

BBC Sport's Alvin McCaig at Windsor Park: "Azerbaijan may not provide the most glamorous opposition, but this game is massive in Northern Ireland's bid to make the finals in Russia. You can safely put your mortgage on world champions Germany winning Group  C, so it all comes down to who will finish second and in the play-off spot.

"That place is currently occupied by undefeated Azerbaijan, who have yet to concede a goal in three qualifiers. Northern Ireland are three points adrift but Michael O'Neill's side will go second with a victory. A tight, tense affair is expected and one goal could be decisive.

"The rain is swirling in the Windsor Park floodlights and there is a distinct chill in the air. So just a typical November night in Belfast then. Let's hope the action can warm us up."

    england Scotland combined XI

    So here is it.

This is the team you picked as the best England and Scotland combined XI over the past 30 years.

    The most popular selections were:

    • Ashley Cole - 69%
    • Kenny Dalglish - 67%
    • Paul Gascoigne - 65%

Interestingly Wayne Rooney was the only player in either of tonight's squads available for selection and he does not make the final XI. He was the fifth most popular striker.
