    Nathan mate!

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg feeds Ryan Bertrand on the right.

The goalscorer picks out Nathan Redmond with a perfect low pass, but the midfielder gets his sidefoot effort all wrong - like, really wrong - and the ball almost goes out for a throw-in. The Cherries player should have let that happen to enhance the embarrassment.

    Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton

Ryan Bertrand may have got Southampton's goal, but he's proving to be a constant threat for Saints, with most of their attacks coming from the full-back's left flank.

He's combining with Jordy Clasie and Sofiane Boufal nicely down that side.

    Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton

It appears both defences are already on the egg nog.

Sofiane Boufal sets Nathan Redmond free inside the area. The England under-21 star pulls the ball back into the six-yard area, but the Cherries are there to clear before Jay Rodriguez has a chance to apply the finishing touch.

    That didn't last long.

Joshua King pinches the ball off Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, 30 yards from goal, and plays in Callum Wilson. Luckily for the Saints, Maya Yoshida is back there to block the forward's effort.

Both defences are looking a tad brittle.

    Bournemouth 1-1 Southampton

Bournemouth's Jack Wilshere is caught is possession again in his own area - he must stop doing that.

Sofiane Boufal almost makes him pay with his shot, but he doesn't. Obvs.

    Great game though.

    Ryan Bertrand

    Yes, it's 1-1. Football's weird eh?

Ryan Bertrand, who almost had a bit of a sighter earlier, twists and turns on the left of the Cherries area before firing a brilliant angled shot past Artur Boruc.

Jordy Clasie provided the assist fantasy football fans.

    This better not finish 5-4.

    Bournemouth 1-0 Southampton

He didn't seem to have a clue where that shot was going?

Cherries forward Joshua King powers into the area on the right and fires a fierce low strike that hits the boot of 6ft 7in Fraser Forster, who looks around to see where the ball is before collecting.

    The Saints are struggling.

Charlie Daniels bursts forward but Cedric just about manages to get to him inside the area.

    The Cherries are on top.

By the way, that was Wilshere's first league assist since September 2014.

And it was Ake's third goal in six Premier League games.

    What a lovely header!

So, the ball from the corner finds its way to Jack Wilshere lying a little bit deeper. The midfielder dinks the ball to the far post where Nathan Ake gets himself on the defender's near side to send his diving header past Fraser Forster.

Alan Shearer would be proud of that one - striker's instinct.

The ball from Bertrand catches Artur Boruc by surprise, and he has to dart back to his near post to punch the ball away.

    What larks!

Now the Cherries have a corner at the other end. I sense a pattern.

Now the Saints have a corner. Ryan Bertrand to take it.

Jack Wilshere dwells on the ball a little too long in the area and almost allows Ryan Bertrand to steal, but the Bournemouth on-loan midfielder manages to fend off the full-back (legally).

At the other end the Cherries win a corner.

  18. 'Goal scoring has become Southampton's difficulty'published at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

    Bournemouth v Southampton (13:30 GMT)

    Steve Wilson
    Match of the Day commentator

"About 30 miles separate the Vitality Stadium from St Mary's - but for much of their history these two clubs have been worlds apart.

"So long did Bournemouth spend bumbling along in relative obscurity that there was a 50-year gap in league meetings with Southampton from 1960 to 2010, and only a dip down the leagues for the Saints brought them together then.

"Now they are neck-and-neck, with only goal difference keeping Southampton above the Cherries.

"Goal scoring has become Southampton's difficulty - only three in their last seven league games. With Charlie Austin out for months rather than weeks Claude Puel may be looking to buy as soon as the January sales begin."

Bournemouth remain inconsistent but, after dispatching Leicester on Tuesday night, the Cherries have won their last two home games and I am thinking that little run will continue.

"Graeme, do you remember the time when you signed a man claiming to be the cousin of a George Weah when you were manager of the Saints?"

    "Graeme?"
