Southampton boss Claude Puel: "Just before Christmas, it is a good thing, it is a good moment and well deserved. It was difficult in the first half, but in the second half we started well with a good spirit and energy and very good second half for us. I am happy for the players and for Jay Rod.

"It is a good answer after elimination from the Europa League. It shows the good spirit and attitude of the players. it is deserved for all the squad.

"Steven Davies brings experience and is a quality, technical player. He started with a lot of energy and pushed the team froward. You saw this in the second goal and his entrance was important and clinical for the team.

"It was difficult for Jay with his long injury and came back step by step. He has played three-four games since the injury of Charlie Austin. He works well for the team each time and a pleasure to see him happy with two goals."

You have to accept Ozil is one of those 'luxury players'.

Tracking back, sometimes his work rate off the ball is not brilliant but give him the ball and he creates

With great players you have to allow them to use their creativity going forward.

  3. 'We grafted a good win'published at 15:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

    Bournemouth 1-3 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez told BBC Sport: "The second goal was instinctive, the main thing today was the three points, we showed grit against a good Bournemouth side.

"For me, Steven Davis is one of the best players I have played with. He is a great character on and off the pitch.

"It is nice to be part of the team and scoring and feeling sharp. That is the most important thing for a player and I am buzzing.

"A lot has changed at the club since my injury but that is in the past. Things are there to test you and if you overcome them you come back stronger.

"It is football, if you are not scoring or defending well it is brought up. We grafted a good win today."

Just 10 minutes to go until kick-off in our two later games. At White Hart Lane that corner has now been knocked down altogether.

  5. 'We weren't at our normal level'published at 15:47 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2016

    Bournemouth 1-3 Southampton

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: "We weren't at our normal level. Technically we were below the standards we set.

"Their goal was a key moment because we had been good value for our lead. It was a poor goal to concede.

"When you look back maybe the Leicester game took more out of us than we realised.

"I don't need reminding how difficult this league is but the intensity levels are extreme. It's a bad day at the office for us but we have to bounce back."

Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez: "The lads worked hard. First half was difficult, but we showed what we are capable of in the second half. It was true grit and determination.

"The second goal I enjoyed more but any goal scored means a lot. Just playing is the best feeling. Football is great.

"On a personal level, you want to be out there winning with your team. I want more of it, and to keep scoring."

Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand: "We have been a bit shy of goals at late, but we all have to chip in. Going 1-0 down gives you the determination to get back in it.

"We are in the running for another consistent high finish and it is important to finish the busy Christmas period on a positive note."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola's decision-making is clearly not governed by big price tags as £47.5m John Stones is once again dropped to the bench.

Stones had a nightmare in the 4-2 defeat at Leicester City last Saturday and has paid the price with his place.

Guardiola makes two changes for this one, with Fernando coming in for Ilkay Gundogan, who is out for the rest of the season with knee ligament damage. Leroy Sane starts with Nolito as substitute.

New York Times football correspondent Rory Smith on BBC Radio 5 live: "Guardiola has always struggled to buy defenders.

"Barcelona spent a fortune on Dmytro Chygrynskiy and he didn't settle. Bayern signed Medhi Benatia who was meant to be the best centre back in Serie A and he couldn't settle.

"It is hard to be a centre back for Guardiola.

"He has such a set idea on how to play and he needs defenders to do specific things."

I find it really concerning that Kolarov is playing at central defence again.

He has no pace and positionally he is not experienced. He is very reactive to situations. He is not thinking what might happen.

He waits for it to happen and he then reacts and we have seen in the last few games that he can't get back quick enough.

John Stones and Kelechi Iheanacho can only look on from the bench despite being specialists at central defence and centre forward respectively. Pep Guardiola continues with Aleksander Kolarov at the back and tries Kevin de Bruyne up front.

Man City: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Kolarov, Clichy, Fernando, Sane, Toure, Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling. Subs: Sagna, Nolito, Caballero, Jesus Navas, Stones, Iheanacho, Garcia.

Arsenal resist the urge to make sweeping changes after defeat at Everton - the only change is on the wing where Alex Iwobi replaces Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Manchester City are a work in progress. Pep Guardiola is constantly trying to figure out how to get to the place he wants to be in three or four years time.

He is asking the players to play a certain way. It is all process. They are going to have ups and downs, Guardiola is still learning a lot.

The players are finding it difficult to get to grips with where Pep wants to be and where they are right now.
