  2. 'A huge chance!'published at 21:08 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Leicester City & Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

It was a huge chance. Firmino was one-on-one with Stekelenburg and tried to lift it over the keeper but it was a good save.

That was a decent save from Maarten Stekelenburg but once Roberto Firmino was away from the last defender he really should have scored.

  4. CLOSE!published at 49 mins

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

What a mess! Liverpool should be ahead but they make a pig's ear of a chance. A ball over the top sends Roberto Firmino in on goal but the ball is bouncing at an awkward height and he can only hit a shot at the head of Maarten Stekelenburg.

Firmino then loops the ball across goal but Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana clatter each other in their attempts to volley it.

An early chance, an early goal is what this game needs. Adam Lallana, a spectator in that first half for much of the game, gets on the ball and starts an attack which comes to nothing.

Gareth Barry is indeed on - he replaces James McCarthy who picked up a knock towards the end of that first half.

If he's not booked in the next 20 minutes I won't eat any more chocolates during this shift.

  11. 'Coleman Everton's best'published at 20:56 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

    Kevin Kilbane
    Former Everton winger

Neither side has shown very much quality in attack so far. Everton started the game well but they have not really threatened yet and, although Romelu Lukaku has seen quite a lot of the ball, he has not had any clear chances.

The reason for that is that Liverpool have got Jordan Henderson dropping on to Lukaku whenever Everton get possession, so that Ragnar Klaven can get a free header when it is played into him.

Seamus Coleman has looked Everton’s brightest player, and the only one who has got in any quality balls into the Liverpool box. If Everton are going to get a goal then I think it is going to come down that right-hand side, from Coleman or Enner Valencia.

Kevin Kilbane joins Charlie Adam and Mark Chapman on MOTD2 at 22:45 GMT on BBC One and the BBC Sport website for highlights of the Merseyside derby and the weekend’s Premier League games

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Goodison Park

Liverpool were just getting a little bit more joy as that first half went on. Everton's tempo dropped and one good chance for either side.

Divock Origi turned one wide at the near post and Ramiro Funes Mori should have hit the target with a header from Ross Barkley's corner.

  15. 'Nobody has taken control'published at 20:49 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

    Robbie Savage
Ex-Leicester City & Wales midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Good intensity from both teams. Lovren and Klavan have done well when the ball has gone into the Liverpool box.

Nobody has taken control or taken the game by the scruff of the neck. Let's hope for better in the second half.

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

Our colleagues on BBC Radio 5 live are passing the time during the break with a quiz.

Everton’s last victory in the Merseyside derby was a 2-0 win back in 2010.

Can you name the missing players from both teams?

    Let us know on #bbcfootball.

There's not been much quality at all in the first half. It's a good tempo - tackles flying in. But no keeper has had a shot to save. Nothing has happened in terms of getting the fans on their feet.

  19. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:46 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

It started quick and fast but ended rather lifeless. More wanted please.

  20. CLOSE!published at 43 mins

    Everton 0-0 Liverpool

A chance! Everton win the first corner of the half and Ramiro Funes Mori can only plant it well wide.

This game needs half-time and a change of approach.
