    Everton v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

We know that this game has a long history of sendings-off, but booking machine Gareth Barry is only on the bench for Everton.

Since I worked out that Barry could draw level with Ryan Giggs at the top of the list of Premier League appearance makers he's been on the bench. My bad.

Team news is nice and simple tonight, with the only change by either side an enforced one.

Everton: Stekelenburg, Coleman, Ashley Williams, Funes Mori, Baines, McCarthy, Gana, Lennon, Barkley, Valencia, Lukaku.

Subs: Robles, Mirallas, Cleverley, Barry, Calvert-Lewin, Holgate, Kenny.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to reporter Juliette Ferrington: "It's good to have Daniel Sturridge back and that's why we took him on the bench. Maybe not for tonight but for the next few weeks.

"I've waited a long time to come to Goodison. I like ground-hopping. A chance to win new points. I went on the pitch earlier.

"It was a coincidence i watched [Rocky film] Creed in the build-up - Goodison Park played a  role."

There is an edge in the dressing room before the game.

When they go out for the warm-up they will relax more. A spark in the match that gets the crowd going will relieve some tension.

  8. Liverpool suffer Matip blowpublished at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 19 December 2016

    Everton v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Goodison Park

Liverpool had been hoping to have influential defender Joel Matip available after an ankle injury but he is ruled out and Ragnar Klavan is charged with the task of taming Everton danger man Romelu Lukaku.

There was talk of Mason Holgate coming into a three-man Everton central defence but in the end it is a straight swap, with Ramiro Funes Mori coming in for suspended Phil Jagielka.

Argentine Funes Mori was sent off in disgrace in Everton's 4-0 loss at Anfield at the end of last season for a dreadful tackle on Liverpool's Divock Origi, who will be in direct opposition tonight.

First man out for a look at the Goodison Park surface? Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Simon Mignolet keeps his place tonight ahead of Loris Karius. The right call?

These are always just absolutely mad games and, whoever is top or bottom, form has absolutely no bearing on the outcome.

I am going to go with a draw, purely because I don't know what is going to happen.

    Prediction: 1-1

It was probably the sporting highlight of the Olympics - well, one of them anyway. In terms of pure performance.

South African Wayde van Niekerk broke Michael Johnson's 17-year-old 400m world record to sensationally win Olympic gold at Rio 2016.

The 24-year-old finished in 43.03 seconds, 0.15 quicker than the time Johnson clocked in Seville in 1999.

And now the long-term Liverpool fan is in town for the derby.

Make it a good game now lads.

One of the oldest, one of the best. Maybe.

I've got a lot of time for Goodison Park, even if I did say that this game was at Anfield earlier. It can certainly provide an electric atmosphere at times and we can start Christmas week with a bang tonight.

    Everton v Liverpool (20:00 GMT)

    Simon Brotherton
    Match of the Day commentator

It's six years since Everton last enjoyed a league win over their great rivals from across Stanley Park and, in recent times, it's been a derby very much dominated by the red half of Merseyside.

That win for Everton in October 2010 is their only success in the past 19 meetings.

However, they will draw confidence from a stirring and much-needed win over Arsenal on Tuesday which stopped the rot after just one win in the previous 10.

Liverpool are unbeaten in the past 11 league meetings with Everton and arrive in scintillating goalscoring form this season but, perhaps just as importantly, kept a clean sheet in winning at Middlesbrough in midweek, coinciding with Simon Mignolet's reinstatement between the posts.
