"Ten men against a team like this is very hard, but we had chances. We had to score the goal when you had the chance. That would have lifted us up, I am disappointed with the result and frustrated by how we lost it, but I am proud of my players."

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho speaking to BBC Sport: "It made it difficult for us, but more difficult for them. Forty-eight hours is tough. It was hard for us to think well with one more man and it was very hard for them physically.

"I was happy with my choices in Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford. They gave us what we needed. Rashford is very professional and very mature, he is a Manchester United player with Manchester United DNA.

Having Ibra this season and next season is excellent for Marcus.

"I don't feel sorry for West Ham - I didn't watch the decisions. I think if you talk about decisions, we are the champions of bad decisions."

Marcus Rashford is naturally very fit and very fast and he gave us width in the game. It is a matter of time before we scored a goal.

"David de Gea was crucial for us.

"I have the feeling we can win the next match. We don't chase records, we chase good performances and points. We know Chelsea or Tottenham will lose points, like Liverpool or Manchester City last week. We have played well but drew too much. Now we have 18 points from six games, exactly what we need."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho speaking to Sky Sports: "Job done, but congratulations to everyone on the pitch because I thought it was very hard. I was disappointed by some mistakes and decisions on the pitch, but that is fatigue, there are no miracles.

"We kept a clean sheet because David de Gea made a good save from Antonio, we had to move the ball and create space. I had Mata and Rashford on the bench to bring a different intensity.

"I didn't make anything of the red card. I was too far away and did not watch it on television. I have had to educate myself in the first half of the season because of so many decisions - Zlatan's disallowed goal, a clear penalty against Crystal Palace. It is great for the fans and the people at home, but it is hard for us, even for me."

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford speaking to Sky Sports: "He just told me to stay wide and get at the full-back. I did that and followed those orders. As soon as I looked up he was the option and I was just pleased he finished it. It was a big three points.

"We are in and around the top four. It is tight between second and sixth and we need to keep winning every match."

Manchester United's first scorer Juan Mata speaks to Sky Sports: "We needed to win. We knew some results from our rivals so we had to get the three points. We had to score and luckily we did it.

"It started to feel like one of those nights where you have chances and don't score. The manager said just try to score, try to create something. There were spaces so I just tried to stay there and create chances. The most important thing is we keep this run of results."
