Tottenham goalscorer Dele Alli speaking to BBC Sport: "It is strange for me to use my head rather than my feet, but today I didn’t get on the ball as much as I wanted. I felt that if I was going to dribble it would be with my head!

"There is a bit of history between the sides now after last season and I think we wanted to stop their run like they did ours. We are happy to stay under the radar and keep picking up the points. We are not going to get carried away, there is always room for improvement."

Christy Hall: As a Chelsea fan, very impressed with Spurs - particularly defensively. Not a lot to show from either side going forward.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino talking to BBC Sport: “It is a massive victory, a very important three points to reduce the gap at the top of the table. It was a very tough game, we were playing one of the best teams in Europe, so the value of the victory is massive.

“It makes us very proud and we showed character and were competitive. It is one step forward for the team and is important to keep going. Football is about belief.

"We have shown we can challenge for the big things. We are in a good position, Chelsea is in a very good position, but we are fighting to get points and to reduce the gap above us.

“To cope with that type of game, not only to play well, but to be competitive is a thing only you can learn with time and experience.

“Maybe we missed a little bit to fight for big things last season. The most pleasing thing was we showed big character against a team fighting for big things.

"We are in a good position, third in the table, but it is a long way to finish the season."

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte speaking to BBC Sport: "I saw a game with a great balance. It is not easy to play against Tottenham. But we played with a good personality to create the chances to score a goal, but we could not take them. 

"It is strange for us to concede these goals because we are defending well, and they are in a crucial moment. At the end of the first half and then in the second half after we miss the chances to score, but this can happen. 

"We must work hard and be pleased with our position in the table, but know this league is tough until the end for the Champions League, for the title."

On the difference between this defeat and their last in the league, 4-0 against Arsenal in September: "This is a different defeat to the one in September because today we lost the game, but showed that we were a team. Against Arsenal, we weren’t a team, today we were."

Chelsea have some big games against teams fighting at both ends of the table coming up. Their next six games are against champions Leicester, managerless Hull, title rivals Liverpool, Arsenal, Burnley and Swansea.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte speaking to Sky Sports: “We knew that defeat could happen before the game but I think today I saw a game with a good balance and they scored a goal at the end of the first-half and the second goal in our best moment.

“It is a pity to stop this run, but Tottenham is a good team, a really strong team and I think is for sure one of the teams that can fight for the title until the end. They fought last season and they can fight also this year.

"When you concede two goals, for sure you have to improve. My team are top of the table because we are working a lot. This league is very tough and it is important to continue to work."

If this is what it is going to take to stop this Chelsea side I don’t see it happening too often. I don’t see many teams being able to put together that mixture of skill and strength that Spurs put in tonight on a consistent basis.

They just came up against a better side on the night.

Arsenal had one of the biggest periods of rest this year and secured seven points out of nine (only Manchester United and Spurs picked up all nine and they both had games in quicker succession than Arsenal).

Chelsea meanwhile, pick up six points despite having the most rest. Maybe it’s more a case of who you play, rather than when and where…

Arsene Wenger calls it "unfair", Jose Mourinho says it "creates problems" and Sam Allardyce thinks the person responsible for it should be sacked.

But with a shortened season next year to help England prepare for the 2018 World Cup, fixture congestion over the festive period could be even worse.

The Premier League has confirmed that a draft fixture schedule for next season could see six rounds of games over Christmas and New Year in 2017-18, as opposed to four this year.

That could see clubs playing six games in 17 days from 16 December 2017 to 1 January 2018 inclusive.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill talking to BBC Sport: "We are disappointed to lose the game and not beat the record, all of us are a part of that, but one loss in 14 games is an incredible record.

"We were short of the levels we set ourselves, for whatever reason that may be, a few misplaced passes and not moving the ball as quick as we have been.

"They are a top quality opposition and we got punished for being short. We have strong personalities and it won't affect us mentally."
