  1. ouch!

    Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

A proper 50/50 between Victor Moses and Danny Rose hurts both men. Moses stays down first, and after the play restarts Rose then goes down and calls for treatment.

    Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

Perhaps the longest spell of possession either side have enjoyed so far as Nemanja Matic and N'Golo Kante pick their passes up and down the middle third, finding Eden Hazard and then Diego Costa.

Then it breaks down into more chaos as Chelsea give the ball away and have to hack it clear in ugly fashion.

'A fascinating watch' says John Murray on 5 live, as both sides continue to feel each other out. Spurs are seeing plenty of the play but apart from that long-range strike from Christian Eriksen they haven't troubled that formidable Chelsea backline.

Steve Howes: Red card Spurs tonight, Spurs get aggressive when it doesnt go their way.

Anthony: Funny how Spurs fans are worried about Chelsea being physical when they had 9 yellow cards at the bridge last season.

Scott Young: Will Martin Atkinson finally get the courage to give a big decision against Chelsea if called on?

Diego Costa is tripped by Toby Alderweireld and David Luiz trundles forwards for the free-kick. We all know what is coming as the Brazilian shovels the shot on goal with that up and down technique he has, but he can't control it and it's well over the top.

Those are the moments Chelsea are waiting for, they are going to have to soak up the pressure and then be on it on the counter attack.

It's not always a bad thing when you see players arguing, it means both want it.

  7. CLOSE!published at 23 mins

    Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

And now Spurs are so close to opening the scoring with their first effort of the night. Again it comes on the counter as N'Golo Kante is robbed of the ball and Christian Eriksen is able to run in on the Chelsea defence. They back off and the Dane lifts a shot from about 25 yards which flies just wide of the far corner!

  8. Costa & Pedro exchange wordspublished at 22 mins

Spurs have a corner, and Chelsea should probably score! The leaders counter superbly, Eden Hazard pinging a ball out wide to Diego Costa on the left who gets his head down and runs in on goal.

Pedro sprints up in support, is on for the pass, on for the pass, on for the pass...but Costa can't find him!

Costa and Pedro then have a very public slanging match. And again.

And again! They know that is a real chance...

  9. Walker off to a running startpublished at 20:21 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

There was a lot of talk pre-match of the importance of the two sets of wing-backs.

That has been borne out by the first 15 minutes.

Kyle Walker, on the right, has had more touches than any other Tottenham player with 21.

The graphic below shows how he has tracked the full length of the whitewash.

Spurs have had 53% of the ball so far without mustering a shot on goal. Can they lift it and find a way to hurt this Chelsea side, who are so stingy in defence.

Remember that they have conceded four goals in this 13-match winning run. And scored 32.

  11. 'Chelsea don't take many risks'published at 20:19 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

They have played a lot of long balls, Chelsea, but I don't blame them.

The pitch is very quick, you don't want to take risks, you want to play in attacking third. With Antonio Conte, the way he sets up, the three at the back don't take many risks.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 18 mins

First booking of the night as Pedro slides in on Danny Rose, who just nips the ball past him and is clattered. In the book you go, free-kick in an identical position for Spurs but this one is wasted.

Matthew Swallow: Chelsea have been excellent this season & I think it all rides on Kante. His defensive protection sets the others free to play.

Daphne De Leener: Dembele is severely underrated!

PJ: If I was a Spurs player I'd be thinking back to that 'beating' they took from Chelsea which ended their title hopes last season. Nothing wrong with using revenge as a motivator.

It's been a fairly typical Premier League opening - frantic at times and all 100mph. Both sides struggling to keep possession.

No real flow to the game here at White Hart Lane - with only that one chance for Eden Hazard to raise the temperature.

Pochettinio and Conte, especially Conte, are out in their technical area delivering instructions in animated fashion but it has been a scrappy, disjointed opening phase.

Cross comes in, David Luiz and Marcos Alonso win headers to clear and Kyle Walker shanks a shot well wide from 25 yards.

Surely a handball from Cesar Azilicueta there but the play is waved on, before Danny Rose is clipped by Victor Moses. Not much contact there but a free-kick in a good spot. Quality delivery needed for Spurs.

  18. 'The best midfielder in the league'published at 20:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 January 2017

    Jermaine Jenas
Former England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

When Mousa Dembele is on it for me he is the best midfielder in the Premier League.

The one question mark over him is that he doesn't score enough goals. But in terms of trusting someone with the ball, going past players, on his day he is one of the best - and he's started on fire today.

A high tempo, high energy opening to this game with the one chance for Eden Hazard so far. Danny Rose threatens to get away behind Victor Moses but David Luiz comes across and clears.

Robin Smit: Really annoys me how Chelsea players have that "what me" attitude, Its so boring, always the victim syndrome is so boring now.

Raymond: A Spurs win will be huge. At least to blow the championship wide open. We don't need a runaway team here.

Don Uorri: With the way the ref is letting Chelsea be physical I fear the worst.
