  2. Team newspublished at 14:08 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

Rotherham v Wigan: Peter Odemwingie makes way for Izzy Brown in Rotherham's starting line-up; Wigan make one change as Craig Davies replaces the injured David Perkins.

Wolves v Bristol City: Wolves are unchanged from their 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest, but Joe Mason returns to the bench after injury; Frank Fielding is back in goal for Bristol City, while midfielder Josh Brownhill makes his first start since 18 October.

  3. Back under waypublished at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

    Brentford 0-1 Cardiff

Brentford kick the second half off at Griffin Park, with just 45 minutes to rescue a point or three at home to Cardiff.

We're still waiting for the players to re-emerge in the League One game between Southend and Wimbledon and in Leyton Orient's League Two tie at home to Crawley.

Orient seem set for a second successive home win, having previously lost eight in a row at Brisbane Road, as Paul McCallum scored his second goal just before the break to make it 3-0.

Newport County v Portsmouth (15:00 GMT)

With their normal doctor away today and their stand-in doctor delayed in hospital, Newport County made an unusual plea for help on social media earlier today.

But a good Samaritan would appear to have come forward...

  6. 'Wolfsburg? Nicht für mich!'published at 13:53 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

Huddersfield v Nottingham Forest (15:00 GMT)

    David WagnerImage source, Rex Features

'Tis the season to be jolly for Huddersfield fans, because after finishing no higher than 16th in their past four Championship campaigns, they are doing rather well in fourth place under David Wagner.

And Terriers fans had an early Christmas gift five days ago when BBC Radio Leeds reported that their sought-after boss had turned down an offer to manage Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

You would assume he will therefore receive an especially warm reception from the home fans today when his side host Nottingham Forest.

    Brentford 0-1 Cardiff

    Phil BrownImage source, Rex Features

Peter Whittingham's penalty is the only difference as Cardiff lead Brentford 1-0 at Griffin Park as the half-time whistle blows.

The Bees had a big chance to equalise in stoppage time, but Tom Field misjudged his header and the Bluebirds were able to clear.

In League One, Southend boss Phil Brown looks a happy man as Will Atkinson has given his side a 2-0 lead against Wimbledon just before the break.

Leyton Orient are also 2-0 up as they, with Crawley facing a very tough task pick up their third consecutive win in League Two. There are still four minutes left before the two teams head to the dressing rooms.

    Don't go anywhere, folks.

  9. Warne still in chargepublished at 13:41 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

    Rotherham v Wigan (15:00 GMT)

    Paul WarneImage source, Empics

The Championship's bottom club, Rotherham, have been without a permanent manager since Kenny Jackett's departure on 28 November.

Caretaker boss Paul Warne has stated that he does not want the role on a full-time basis.

But he is set to remain in charge for at least two more games after the club announced on Thursday that they aim to "announce a more permanent solution in early January."

His latest game in the hot seat is at home to second-bottom side Wigan. A massive match for both teams.

  10. No Boxing Day win in 11 yearspublished at 13:38 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

Aston Villa v Burton Albion (15:00 GMT)

    Steve BruceImage source, Getty Images

Aston Villa haven't won on Boxing Day since thrashing Everton 4-0 in 2005, drawing four and losing five since then.

By contrast, today's visitors to Villa Park, 21st-placed Burton Albion, have known nothing but victory so far in league football at this time of year. They've won all four of their previous league games on 26 December.

Steve Bruce's side could do with ending that Brewers record today if they want to close the gap to the play-off places. They're currently six points below sixth, in 13th.

    Brentford 0-1 Cardiff

    Neil WarnockImage source, Getty Images

Cardiff have had the ball in the net for a second time, but it won't count because Sean Morrison was offside as he lifted the ball over Dan Bentley in the Brentford goal.

Bentley is called into action again as Kenneth Zohore - definitely not offside - races in on goal.

The keeper does well, and Brentford remain in contention.

  12. Hungry like the Wolvespublished at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

Wolves v Bristol City (15:00 GMT)

    Matt DohertyImage source, Rex Features

Wolves have dominated matches against Bristol City since losing to the Robins in December 1993, winning 10, drawing three and losing one of the following 14 league contests.

In that run, there have been 4-1, 5-1 and 6-1 victories for Wanderers at Ashton Gate.

The corresponding fixture at Molineux last season was a much tighter affair, with Matt Doherty scoring a stoppage-time winner for Wolves.

    Plymouth celebrateImage source, Rex Features

After the disappointment of last season's play-off final defeat, Plymouth have recovered brilliantly and begin today's fixture programme two points clear at the top of League Two.

Argyle host Wycombe today, while their nearest challengers - Carlisle and Doncaster - are away at Crewe and Notts County respectively.

  14. goal

GOAL: Brentford 0-1 Cardiffpublished at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

    Peter Whittingham (pen)

Brentford aren't happy about it, but Cardiff win a penalty as the referee says Sean Morrison was pulled down by Bees defender Andreas Bjelland.

Peter Whittingham steps up to take the spot-kick and drives the ball straight down the middle to give Cardiff the lead against the run of play.

There's still about 20 minutes left in the first period.

  15. League One previewpublished at 13:23 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

    Hakeeb AdelakunImage source, Rex Features

Given the calibre of clubs in League One this season, not many would have expected Scunthorpe to have been leaders at Christmas. The Iron are head over heels to be topping the pile.

Graham Alexander's side are away at fourth-placed Bradford in the pick of today's third-tier fixtures.

Second-placed Sheffield United host bottom club Oldham, while third-placed Bolton are at home to lowly Shrewsbury, who have won their past two league matches.

  16. EFL latestpublished at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

Christmas might be 364 days away, but Crawley are still clearly in giving mood as they allow Paul McCallum plenty of space to head in Gavin Massey's cross and give Leyton Orient a 2-0 lead.

In League One, Simon Cox has fired Southend into a 1-0 lead against Wimbledon.

No goals in the Championship, but Romaine Sawyers and Scott Hogan have both tested Cardiff keeper Brian Murphy as Brentford press for an opening goal.

  18. Vote nowpublished at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

Which EFL club is the surprise package of the season so far?

There are eight options to choose from in today's vote. Here are the remaining four:

    • In the past five seasons, Leeds United finished 14th, 13th, 15th, 15th and 13th in the Championship, but under Garry Monk they have climbed to fifth in the table and would seem to be genuine promotion contenders this term.
    • Another Championship club thriving since the arrival of a new boss is third-placed Reading, who have kept eight clean sheets in the league already under Jaap Stam.
    • With a three-point lead at the top of League One, Scunthorpe United have enjoyed a superb start to 2016-17 and have won 14 of their first 22 matches, losing just two of their past 17 in the league.
    • On an impressive run of eight wins in a row in all competitions prior to Christmas, Wycombe Wanderers occupy a League Two play-off spot despite finishing down in 13th last season.
  19. First goal of the daypublished at 13:12 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2016

    Leyton Orient 1-0 Crawley

What a way to mark your first start in the English Football League!

Teenager Sam Dalby gets the first goal of the day, converting NIgel Atangana's cross to give Leyton Orient an early lead against Crawley in League Two.

Elsewhere, Brentford have started well in the first of the day's Championship fixtures, with Scott Hogan's cross looking destined to reach Lasse Vibe for a tap in, only for a Cardiff defender to touch it behind.
