So, one game has already fallen foul of the weather tonight and fair to say - it's a bit of a pea souper out there across most of England today with dense fog across vast areas.

It could potentially cause some disruption to travel and this evening's fixtures, as well as the programme for tomorrow on New Year's Eve.

Chris Fawkes from the BBC Weather centre has all the details in the forecast above.

BBC Sussex caught up with referee Chris Kavanagh moments after his decision to postpone tonight's match at the Amex Stadium between Brighton and Cardiff.

"We've been looking at the pitch since 17:00 GMT," he said. "The conditions have got worse in the hour since then and according to the Met Office are set to get even worse up to 20:00 GMT.

"We've stood in the centre (circle) and there's a struggle to see one of the assistants on the near side and then there's a crowd issue too. If I'd paid my money, I'd want to be able to see the game properly."

As mentioned, we were hoping to bring you four games from the Championship tonight but we won't be telling you about events at the Amex Stadium as thick fog on the south coast has forced a postponement.

Pictures below from earlier tonight will show you why referee Chris Kavanagh was forced to make the call just before 18:00 GMT.
