The Cardiff City manager says he "struggled to get out of bed" for their FA Cup third-round defeat by Fulham earlier today.  

Only 5,199 watched Cardiff lose 2-1 at home in a third-round televised tie which kicked off at 11:30 GMT.

"I don't think it's just the 11:30 kick-off, it's the FA Cup in general," he said.

"I struggled to get out of bed and I must admit I wasn't really excited at the prospect of playing the side I'd got to play in the FA Cup. I knew the crowd would be low and I just hoped the fans would be alright with me, and they have been."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce: “We had to defend well and run a million miles because they are a very good side. We had a big chance in the game.

"I was a touch disappointed with the goal because they didn’t have to do much, one cross into the box and we didn’t deal with it.

"You need your goalkeeper to play well and Sam Johnstone looks a very good young goalkeeper - I think he’ll relish the challenge to play week in, week out.

"They are a very good side and that has to be the aspiration for us at Aston Villa."

This year Tottenham have taken Manchester City to the cleaners, beaten Chelsea and were the better team against Manchester United for 60 minutes. 

A trophy is the obvious thing they are missing. The big thing Mauricio Pochettino has changed is the mentality. It's about delivering it now.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: "It's always difficult in the FA Cup, but we played a team that had very good organisation and it was tough to break them. We had lots of possession but a lot patience to try and build from the back.

"I was very pleased in the end, it’s never easy to win in the FA Cup. It was a good opportunity for many players to show their quality. 

"At 0-0 we changed the system a bit to try and change the game and from that we scored.

"I'm pleased for the players that haven’t played too much, it’s important for them to build their confidence."

Mauricio Pochettino to Barcelona? It has been mentioned apparently. But the Spurs laughs off the post-match question about the link, saying something about "being born with a bull in his arm".

Presume that is something to do with being an Espanyol hero. Basically he is saying a move to their city neighbours ain't happening.

It's a victory. I don't think Mauricio Pochettino will be entirely happy with the performance as a whole. Aston Villa had a little go and that ignited Tottenham.

Aston Villa fans might be quite glad their side don't have to play Spurs again for a while.

Spurs have now won nine of their last 10 games in all competitions against Villa.

Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier: "We are delighted. They made it hard and it seemed at times they had six at the back. We reacted well in the second half and the first goal was crucial.

"I train hard every day and it's difficult because I've got Kyle Walker in front of me who has been doing excellent. I need to be ready when called upon."

Spurs goalscorer Ben Davies: "The goal came at a tough time. We were starting to get a bit sloppy, making a few mistakes and once we got the first goal we saw the game out.

"We expect a lot of ourselves. To come out here we have to have that winning mentality and we did today."

Aston Villa will leave here today thinking 'what did we contribute to that game?' I don't think they were positive enough. I just didn't see anything from Villa at all.

With Villa sitting so far back, bringing on Dele Alli for striker Vincent Janssen left the Villa players with no-one to mark up front.

Gary Lineker has just described Spurs misfiring striker Vincent Janssen as "looking like a poor man's Roberto Soldado". Harsh. But true.

Spurs came to life when the Dutchman was removed or, more precisely, when Dele Alli was introduced in his place.

You've got to praise manager Mauricio Pochettino. He realised he had to change things. Dele Alli coming on gave them more pace. They then had more energy to their game. The best team won on the afternoon but it wasn't a great game.

Jon Evans: If Grealish improved his end product he'd be a top player and villa would create a lot more. Sadly he doesn't create chances.  

Dan D: Not sure how Winks has been overlooked for motm to be honest.

Richard Ayris: I think the story of the FA Cup 3rd Round has to be the amount of empty seats at a lot of grounds. Needs looking at now.
