This is starting to warm up. Son Heung-min drills a low cross down the 'corridor of uncertainty' between Villa's keeper and his defence, then Sam Johnstone is called into action to push Harry Winks's long-range shot out of his top right corner.

Sloppy from Spurs. That's a good tackle by Cameron Carter-Vickers and a good block by Toby Alderweireld. Really, really good defending.

Chance for Villa! They've not created much - and this is probably as good as it has got.

A free-kick is sprayed out to the right, Alan Hutton heads back into the six-yard box, Jack Grealish and Gabriel Agbonlahor are lurking. Both try to turn the ball goalwards, Agbonlahor denied by a lunging challenge by Toby Alderweireld.

And still the Belgian doesn't have a hair out of place.

Ah, he's alright. Nathan Baker limps off, gets something soothing sprayed onto his ankle, then jogs back on. Steve Bruce sighs a sigh of relief.

Oh dear. Villa centre-half Nathan Baker flicks clear the set-piece with his forehead, but goes down after landing awkwardly. Time for the magic sponge...

Son Heung-min has moved up top for Spurs since Dele Alli's arrival. And the South Korean immediately bursts into life. He spins his marker Nathan Baker easily, ploughing a rising drive towards the top corner. Sam Johnstone is ready though, palming over for a corner.

Huge roar from the home fans. Partly for Vincent Janssen's departure, largely for Dele Alli's arrival.

The England midfielder comes on, pointing his team-mates into new positions. He slots into the 'number 10' role.

Good spell of pressure from Villa. Alan Hutton threatens on the right flank before the visitors switch to the other side. But Jordan Amavi is dispossessed easily by Kieran Trippier and the move breaks down.

Here he is! Dele Alli is ripping his tracksuit top off and having a tactics board shoved under his nose. Alli's arrival imminent.

The Spurs fans raise the volume - singing Dele Alli's ditty. Have they seen something we haven't? Is he coming on? Seven goals in his past four games...

Bit more impetus in this tie now. Son Heung-min wriggles clear down the left, only for his low cross to find a claret and blue shirt. Hacked clear.

To paraphrase Eric Cantona, I don't know why I like Jack Grealish - but I do. Doesn't have as much impact on games as he should though. He is making Villa tick when they venture forward, driving from midfield. No final ball from Grealish - or any of his team-mates - though.

A great chance for Son Heung-Min. It is a great cross but a poor touch from Son and then he slashes at it.

Chance. Blown. Spurs full-back Kieran Trippier swings in a delicious curling cross from the right flank, finding Son Heung-min at the far post. Does he shoot? Does he cross? He shoots - well, tries to shoot. His feet get in a tangle and he tops the ball like a golfing novice on the first tee.

What's Moussa Sissoko doing on the left flank?! I don't know. But I'm sure Mauricio Pochettino does. The £30m man loops over a cross with his weaker foot, Sam Johnstone keeping his eyes fixed on the ball before grabbing it under his bar.

A shot! On target! Within 60 seconds of the restart! Exclamation marks are not inappropriate.

Spurs stick their first effort at target, Vincent Janssen wanders in from the right flank, shooting a tame effort low at Sam Johnstone.

Jack Grealish, with that slick Shelby-esque haircut and socks rolled down to his ankles, has the honour of restarting the game. Hold on to your hats...

Jack Grealish and Dele Alli are having a good chinwag as the players re-emerge from the tunnel. Perhaps they're discussing hairdressers. Someone told me the other day that Alli has his barnet snipped twice a week. Twice a week! I go twice a year.

  19. 'Good defensive display'published at 16:59 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January 2017

    Liverpool 0-0 Plymouth Argyle

Some more reaction from one of today's earlier games...

Plymouth manager Derek Adams: "We had a very good defensive display. We allowed Liverpool the ball. When we had the ball we still created a couple of opportunities.

"We had gone it at half-time at 0-0 and that was important. We knew Liverpool might start the second half at a better tempo and we coped with that well. We knew we would get a bit of belief as well.

"We've had a couple of opportunities in the game that we might have done better with but that would be asking too much."

On an injury to Gary Miller: "He's either got a broken ankle or ankle ligament damage. We'll see what happens. It's disappointing for him and the team."
