Wigan have played this game in the right spirit.

It didn't work out for them but they can be proud of their efforts.

Manchester united have just had too much quality.

Debutant Axel Tuanzebe has seen plenty of the ball since coming on. I think he's a centre-half by trade but he's filled in fine on the right-hand side. As soon as I say that he loses the ball.

  4. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 87 mins

    Manchester United 4-0 Wigan

Anthony Martial has the ball in the net but the whistle had already gone as Bastian Schweinsteiger was trying another overhead effort. Wigan desperate to hear that final whistle now.

Manchester United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan rectifies his earlier miss with a similar tap in to make it 3-0. He finishes following a brilliant counter-attack after good work from Anthony Martial.

    Schweinsteiger improvises really well there.

He is in a great area for scoring goals.

  13. CLOSE!published at 80 mins

    Manchester United 3-0 Wigan

Neat football now from Manchester United. The front three link up nicely as first a Henrikh Mkhitaryan cross is just beyond Wayne Rooney and then Anthony Martial's header is cleared from a few yards out.

Andrew Priestley: Fantastic counter-attacking goal from Manchester United. The whole team in full-flow, like the United of the 90s and 00s.

Peter Malath: That was a blistering counter attack from 2008 from Manchester United. Mkhitaryan boom.

  15. CLOSE!published at 77 mins

    Manchester United 3-0 Wigan

Marcus Browne, just on for his Wigan debut, lashes in a shot after some shoddy defending at the far post and his effort is deflected narrowly wide.

Wigan have had their chances tonight.

Martial's running with the ball was top quality. The weight on the ball was beautiful.

He makes it look so easy and Mkhitaryan can't miss.

Manchester United were in full flow and that is when they are at their best.

A cracking counter-attacking goal, Wolves would approve. A Wigan corner is cleared by Bastian Schweinsteiger to Wayne Rooney on the halfway line, who lays it off superbly into the path of Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The Armenian accelerates through the gap to sprint in on goal before freeing Anthony Martial, who lays it back on a plate for the close-range finish.

Chance for Wigan as right-back Callum Connolly avoids the Manchester United defence but can only head straight at the keeper.

Wigan look tired now. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is able to carry the ball a good 50 yards, not even in top gear, and then play a one-two with Wayne Rooney. He brings the ball down on his thigh but then scuffs wide.
